Very cool video. How large a tank is he in? How do you keep it clean...what with not being able to have a clean up crew in it?

Post more videos. They are great.

Jim - Large water changes. ;)

He's in a 7G bowfront right now... i'm looking around for something in the 15G range in acrylic. So far he's been the model citizen. He keeps busy building his rock rubble fortified home. It's neat to watch him drag some sand out and pack it into other areas of the tank.

He already recognizes my feeding stick as a source of free food.

He's about 5 inches long.

Wow that is a COOL video. I was thinking about getting one of those. What else do you feed it??

So far the list includes...

Hermit crabs
Ghost shrimp
Clam from HEB
& a damsel

I've got some shrimp I plan to feed him later as well, but i'd really like to find more hermit crabs. It makes him have to work at getting them out and it's healthy for him to have to break the shells. It keeps his raptoral appendages nice and strong.

;)

Chris, Very cool!

I love these guys! When I was in school, my housemate was Dr. Roy Caldwell's lab assistant. He took me by once and Dr. Caldwell had dozens of different mantis shrimp from all over the world.

Imagine a 12" long mantis with an attitude! They would catch crabs down by the Berkeley pier to feed them.

Cheers
James

Neat James,

Dr. Caldwell is fairly active on ReefCentral's mantis forum and has provided numerous posts of information about them. Seeing how he's spent the better part of his life dedicated to the study of these interesting creatures, i'm sure he'd have a lot fun showing them off.

A friend of mine had a conversation with a Dr. out of Maryland, his name escapes me at the moment but to make a long story short - he and his colleagues added 5 of 6 different mantis species to a tank to see which would come out the victor. Odontodactylus scyllarus, or the Peacock (the one in the video above) came out as the clear winner.

~Chris ;)
