This has been a terrible year for us as far as dogs are concerned. In March we had to say goodbye to our oldest, one week shy of her 11th birthday, due to old age and almost certainly cancer. In August, we took our youngest to be spayed, and that night she came into the living room, lay down, and died right in front of us. We figure she must have thrown a blood clot or something. She was only 6 years old and still acted like a puppy. We've been using the same great vet forever, so we don't think it was anything they did wrong.

On a much happier note, we got a new 12-week-old puppy yesterday. It is a fairly new breed, not yet recognized by the AKC but hopefully in the next couple years, called Silken Windhound. It is basically an attempt to create a miniature Borzoi. It was started in 1985 by crossing a Borzoi with a Whippet, and I think there is some Sheltie in there later. Not only is he the first of this breed for us, but also our first male dog ever, so this should be an adventure.

Here he is at 8 weeks when we first met him. You can really see the Sheltie influence in this picture.

Here he is yesterday with his mother and a couple siblings.

Amelia, our 10-year-old Borzoi, tolerates him just fine, but doesn't seem too thrilled.

Im so sorry to hear about the loss of your dogs, it is never easy to lose a fur baby regardless of whether you know its coming or its sudden.

As for your new puppy, he is adorable! I've never heard of the breed, but I can definitely see the Borzoi and sheltie influence :). Have you decided on a name yet?

Thanks. We're keeping the breeder's name of Pasquali. She let her husband name the litter, and he chose construction and farm equipment as the theme. Pasquali is a small tractor used in the vineyards in Italy (we had to look that up).

Sorry for your loss. I have an indoor/outdoor cat and I think about how she’s going to leave us some times and it’s going to destroy me. I realize I love my pet much more than I’d admit, and I couldn’t imagine getting hit with that twice.

Nice pictures. I know first hand how tough it is to loose man's best friend. My dog got fixed last spring and will never do that to a dog again it was that bad.

How's Pasquali doing?
He's doing very well. He is a good boy for the most part, although Monday morning he lifted his leg towards our antique player piano and is lucky to be alive after that. The best thing is he sleeps through the night. He and Amelia are very close to playing - he is still a little intimidated by her size and she is not quite sure how to deal with this little thing that is so ridiculously fast. He literally bounces off the walls when he really gets going. He is learning to sit reasonably well, and sometimes we can get a few seconds of "stay" from him. He really loves his snuggle time.

Oops, I did it again! We got another male Silken Windhound Saturday evening. His name is Henson, and he will be two years old in October. He is from the same breeder - in fact, he is Pasquali's half brother. They are best buddies already. And Amelia is ecstatic. She will be 11 years old this month, and I'm sure having a puppy constantly biting her legs and pulling her tail was driving her a bit crazy. Now she can just watch the youngsters play with each other and only be part of it if she wants to.

Pasquali should be about full grown at 10 months old and about 30 pounds, but he still looks small next to our Borzoi.

We did not realize going into this that there was parrot DNA in this breed, but Pasquali loves to perch. The dog on the right is a visiting Borzoi. Although she is spayed, Pasquali went absolutely bonkers over her - teenage hormones.

These are the least exotic parrots I’ve ever seen. Maybe they’re Nordic parrots.
