Hello all. Just got this beauty last week from a fellow Reefer but in the last 2 days he has an infection of some sort on his left fin.

Have no clue what it is not how to treat it or will it hopefully heal on its own.

looks too large to be some sort of fungus disease - seems like internal tissues.

kind of looks like Lymphocystis virus.

If it is, it is not curable but rarely causes the fish any permanent issues (can come & go) depending on stress level of fish.

Thanks for the replies guys. Whatever it is it’s on his left fin and he’s unable to flap it therefor he’s swimming funny. Another board suggested that it’s a bacterial infection and suggested treating him in a hospital tank with Furan 2 Kanaplex metroplex and nfg. What’re your thoughts?

I agree with Steveb. You could try a broad spectrum antibiotic but looks like lymphocytis to me too. I would best describe it as looking like cauliflower or a wart. If that is what it is, it will go away. My naso had one pop up on his head when I first got him and it got about the size of a pea. It eventually went away on its own leaving a tiny scar similar to an acne scar.

In fact, if it were me personally, I wouldn't treat him at all and just observe. If his fin starts to decay, then it's not Lympho. If it stays the same, that's what it is. Mine took about 2 months or so to go away.

That’s a relief to hear if it is lymphocytis. Believe me trying to catching him and qt-Ing him is on the bottom of my want to do list. I just want to be proactive as it would suck to lose him but I’ll take your advice and observe for a few days. In the meantime I will try to get a better pic to get a more accurate diagnosis

yeah to catch it/qt it that will stress it too much - like Webster said just observe and hopefully it gets better.

I’m trying to get the medications ready just in case. Do you guys know where to get furan 2, kanaplex, metroplex, or nfg locally? I checked petsmart and Petco but only found Melafix

Here he is today. It’s getting worse. With these pictures can you confirm that it’s lymphocystic?

Still really hard to tell in those pictures. But if it looks like a wart or cauliflower looking bump, it's Lymphocytis.

If it looks like the flesh or fin is "rotting" away, it's a bacterial infection. Most infections will create holes, indentions, or some sort of concave impression where the flesh is dissolving.

Lympho will be on top of the skin or fin like a growth. I've even mistaken it in the past for a fluke or parasite attached to the fish. I can't say it any other way other than it looks like something "attached" to the fish. I've seen it on both fins and the skin. I've also seen it pop up in a couple different places before it finally went away. I've even seen it pop up as a string of small bumps along the lateral line of the fish.

As long has he is swimming normal and eating, i'd leave him be. I don't think you'll accomplish anything by capturing him and medicating him with multiple antibiotics, all of which will also stress the fish's immune system, along with the stress of being caught and placed in a hospital tank. Just my opinion of course.

What other fish do you have in the tank/other wrasses? Just to get an idea of the environment.

It definitely looks like skin/flesh that’s rotting. At first I was opting that it looked like cauliflower like you described. Wish it would let me take a better pic but he keeps swimming away every time I get close to snap a pic.

I’m the tank I only have a purple tang, copperband butterfly, a bicolor blenny and a leopard wrasse.

I’d start running a broad spec antibiotic personally.
