Figured this would be a good way to introduce myself to the club.

My name is Drew (and my wife, Jana, occasionally attends events with me). I am a recent transplant from the San Francisco Bay Area. Moved out here at the end of April due to a job transfer. Since then I've been super busy around the house, but finally got uit up and running. I just put my first inhabitants yesterday and wanted to share. I've been keeping aquariums since I was younger than I can remember, and have had s/w since about 2002.

A few years ago my wife and I decided to start a coral farming enterprise and we converted the garage to mostly a "fish" room with my car pushed off to the side. Unforunetly she has had a few back surgeries and we couldn't continue with it so we shut it down a couple years after we started it. Although we are still very much into aquariums.

Ok that's enough of the old pictures... onto the new!

This 65g tank was given to me from a member of my old club. He was getting out of the hobby and gave the stand aquarium and canopy to me. I moved everything out here, but once here I didn't like the stand as it wasn't as sturdy as I liked and it had some salt damage to begin with. So if I wanted to keep it I would have to strip it and re-seal it to begin with. I am planning on putting a facade of a black plastic around it attached by magnets. I hope it'll look clean... we'll see!

So at this point i have some hermits and snails in the tank. I used the Red Sea Starter Kit that promises to be "reef mature in 21 days". I am past the 21 day point, but I don't trust it being really ready. All my fish are back in California being watched by a co-worker and reefer that had several spare systems running. I also gave him all my corals and just asked for frags of them when I am ready.

My plan at this point is as long as nothing goes wrong with the inhabitants in there now, to add a fish or two in the next 1-2 weeks. Then maybe a 2 weeks later ask my friend to overnight my fish (a couple clowns, and potters angel). I had a Christmas wrasse and a flame tip tang also but the wrasse passed away and the tang was "borrowed" by another tank that had an algae problem.

This isn't my long term tank, but it's enough to get started for now. This is the first house we've bought so it's really nice to not have to worry about a move or a landlord changing things up on us.

Equipment List:
Unknown Brand 65g
Skimmz UP18 (got from someone out here on CL)
Jebao TW-25 (controlled threw Jebao to Apex adapter)
Jebao RW-4 (controlled threw Jebao to Apex adapter)
Jebao DCT-1200
Neptune Apex Classic
2x RapidLED Corona

Congrats on getting back in. And having moved a lot in the past, I know what it's like to finally set up something and not have to worry about moving it any time soon.

Thanks guys, very excited to get this back up and running. really excited about not having to move soon, but I am already looking at bigger aquariums. Really want something about 40" wide at most, which is a strange size. Wife told me to stop even considering it now and to give it a little bit of time. (lol)

Anyways, Don't like my float valve setup. I currently have two float valves in there with the lower one in the default orientation, the the upper one is upside down. I currently use the upper as a "safety' so that if the water ever gets to it, it will turn off. While the lower one wil trigger when it lowers, and turn off when it raises.

So I am going to add this guy:
3IXMd5b40IqASOEX-m0orOjspfhptuxb9pVag_IFaohxq_66_vqbNUSCX0sKKFEH7PrYaEF1F0xhY7mAt8RqRhyK6ZFv4BOogJ2esvOpFVjRTD7Sd7navVbPgr7WROTyTDnVqsNXj7vauKZ2zTsL9-Vu3m2yCQpmjHfRZADQecRpR_6wUzmM4gr5e5XMDxndYKKKQ1fvOyLthcB-KU20ibSonIcTYiBWzXNdsTNbl7DrdN1rgofh7b9cjz_ogHrBgaqbkAl5F7f674B4paLoINqfIfiVFPNbsF3ecQP6HIuY0FYdHaXubYdFWw6WWtwhkok1R6acKw2diZJ6uvtPhCeItOO87nW8NLTrWN99ERbOIhfl5u9pqziH8gfzPS8Dbhba1Nn9g9MGqSGutDxiT_k4T0XRUsA_9aJ4OHpAk2hc2k2_xwMD7t66hY7kz4cEKISiH43-0p-R0S_YWmZPxcsjv4tlghlonC2NUO-2W3Kk97JBzUB35D5uWbG0TGDcqnvHiaOveujRxPQbubeexlDlZkReVc9D3GghgquHsp8gI2vrhXQ6z8XOohs-BNBywVMv3hUxH6UrpNJu1VcxAgJS91XyExkGqiLSaRZV=w1352-h1014-no

The plan is to program it so that the bottom gets low it'll turn on until the middle (previously top) raises up. This should help prevent it from turning off and on too much. I don't think that extra bit of water will affect salinity enough to worry. My old display never had a ATO and it never was an issue.

Trying to get a couple fish off someone on FB currently. Hopefully pick them up next week if it pans out! All the current inhabitants seem to be just fine.

Looking for some advice.

As I am getting closer to having my fish shipped over to me I am looking for thoughts on my method and or experience from anyone.

Shipping Method: Southwest Cargo. It's $99 for up to 100lbs. If I can get him to drop it off at the right time, the travel time is 3:45. I know add a little bit of type for dropping them off, getting them to the cargo area, etc. So maybe total time would be closer to 5 hours. I think that's much more reasonable than paying $50 for overnight shipping which could be up to 24 hours (depending on delivery).

Container: I am torn between buying a cheap plastic cooler and using that or using a cardboard box and Styrofoam in it.

Heating / Cooling Element: I really don't know if anything like this is needed. We all know the weather out here is rather warm, and the weather out there (San Jose, California) is rather mild (80-90 according to weather.com).

Bags: I just read up and found things called breathing bags, are they worth it? They say no fish with sharp edges. I don't think any of them have any sharp fins or anything (enough to puncture a bag at least) but with it only being 5 hours or so, I don't think I really need a breather bag.

Anyways just looking for advice if anyone has any comments or suggestions.

If your having fish shipped to you the shipper should take care of these items. Have fished shipped to me
on regular basis. The box they send is all you need. One thing I do like is to have the fish shipped will call
and pick them up first thing myself, instead of them riding in a hot truck.

If your having fish shipped to you the shipper should take care of these items. Have fished shipped to me
on regular basis. The box they send is all you need. One thing I do like is to have the fish shipped will call
and pick them up first thing myself, instead of them riding in a hot truck.
It's just a friend of mine that is shipping my fish back. He's never shipped fish nor have I that's why we are a bit new to this.

Yeah I know what you mean about will call. When I used to order shipments of coral I did that most of the time. Since I am shipping fish that have sentimental value that's why i rather pay the extra $40-50 to have it shipped on a plane and minimize the risk to them.

I would have your friend drive them to the nearest LFS and have them ship. They'll have oxygen and triple bag to make sure it doesn't leak and your fish die. Fish will die very quickly if the bags aren't filled with oxygen. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys, i think I am going to go a hybrid. Have my friend take them to a store to have bagged then directly to the airport so that I get them as quick as possible. Hopefully this coming weekend we'll get it taken care of. I like the idea of having the LFS do the bagging.

Hey guys, been slow on the updates... I still haven't gotten my fish yet.... Southwest air cargo hasn't approved my account in a few months now. Getting ready to give up that method and just have him take it to a shop and have them ship it.

Tank is doing well... just a few pics from today.

Most of my Zoa's (at least all the ones I've put on the rocks) @Cody hooked me up with the Scrambled Eggs in the center at the frag swap @reeftopia gave me the red digi hanging in for a pic :)
