So I just got my latest home appraisal in the mail. Apparently my home is now worth a little over 50K than what I paid for it 2 years ago (I bought my home for 170K). There is no way in hell my home is worth that now...if it were I'd have a for sale sign in the front yard. I know the real estate market is hot here in Houston, but also feel like the tax man is using this as an excuse to screw me hard. Has anyone successfully tried protesting one of these notices?

Ya, just because it's easy, I use O'Connor. They automatically protest it every year. Sometimes they are successful, sometimes not.
You can protest it yourself, i just don't have the time to deal with it.

I clean O'Connor lol..... everyone in Harris Co got a straight 10-15% jump that and they'll do to you every year if you don't use one if the best liek mentioned... O'Connor & Associates . But this year there was no contest on the protest... in Harris Co. Now some of you in Mont Co or Ft Bend might be able to fight it. But umm as cleaning the appraisal district for FB taxes are on their way up up up from the growth out west in Cinco and areas around in fbc..... fulshear..... hehe.... wanna know something, ask the janitor. Majority property owners in Harris Co could not get a their appraisal lowered or kept the same unless adequate damage to structure /property could be proved. Harris Co sucking up the massive growth from cypress taxes.... 4.28? here before homestead..... 2 muds?..... 13 schools zoned to be finished in next 5 yrs... my daughter elementary is liek all green, solar, wind, water powered.... costs? 2.5 x's more then the avg elementary school. I mean is so cool Iiek going there :spy: anyways so that's one big factor is the rise in property taxes
Half my street sold their homes in 30-45 days for the past 4 months... y? Cause they are making a profit cause housing really is/was cheap here. But with the exponential growth coming here to Houston we have no choice or the city/counties will be broke. The big reason why the state also funded to get the roads done like 99 asap.... more toll money too :crutch:

I protested mine twice. I did it myself and was successful both times. The first time I discovered their description of the house had it about 300 square feet bigger than it really is. The second time I asked them to show me what sales the number was based on, and they were using some sales in an adjacent neighborhood that has fancier houses than mine.

I protest almost every year, and almost always get the value reduced - sometimes only a few percent, sometimes more. It adds up over the years. Now you can do it online and if you accept their revised value it's done. If you don't accept it, you have to make an appointment and go to their offices to try and make your case. The initial protest is so quick and easy that I think it's worthwhile for everyone to do it. Takes maybe 30 minutes or less to gather your data and state why you feel the value is less. The website link should be shown on you statement of appraised value received.

O'Connor sucks I ended up having to take them to court for them trying to represent me after I fired them. There are cheaper companies out there that will do the same thing for less. I now do my own protesting. Its fairly easy to do. Just do some research on what the houses around you are paying and then the compareable sales. Pretty easy takes me less than an hr to do.

Depends on the area. My home appreciated $78,000 in 4.3 years, was recently sold.

You can protest it. It's very simple. Once you protest it, they will send you a letter for the hearing.

-Take lots of pictures of the issues with the house from cracked foundation concrete to weeds in the yard. Also pull the home appraisals for your neighbors. Compare their property to yours. Go prepare and ready to argue your points. I fought mine every year. Most of the time they drop the appraised value by at least $20K.

Most people posting here they got the reduction are not in Harris Co? Montgomeryl, liberty, fb. Etcccc this is strictly Harris County and the City bringing in extra monies. If your taxes went up a lot then that's instant equity. Sell if u can't afford the taxes, you'll end up with more cash in hand to be able to make decisions whether it's downgrading, upgrading in a lower tax area etc.
