I recently ordered some Purit in hopes of reducing silicates in my reef tank. Every other parameter is good, and I continue to have diatoms/brown algae. Silicates are about the only other thing I know that could cause the diatoms/algae. I also ordered a Silicate test kit, but it has yet to arrive. My question is do you use Purit in lieu of carbon, or in addition to carbon? I will be using media bags in my sump. I do not have a reactor. Currently, I am running a bag a Rox carbon from BRS

I'm not going to put it in until my test kit arrives. Once I can test the water, I am going to put a bag of Purit in next to a bag of carbon. I will report back any results.

I just started using this stuff a couple months ago and it works wonders. I had a couple pieces of coral losing flesh that I just couldn't figure out why, all my parameters were good and there are a bunch of other corals in the tank that are all thriving. Saw a video of a guy with similar issues that this fixed right up so figured why not. Added a small bag of less than half the recommended dose next to my regular carbon. Next day flesh loss had stopped and saw new growth within a couple weeks. Now after about 7 weeks after slowly adding more, everything seems healthier and brighter. I didn't have much issues with algae before, but I have seen a reduction in the green hair algae I do have.

My situation sounds similar. I have never been able to keep favia or acans alive. The other coral seems ok, and I even have some sps that is doing pretty good. My main stressor is the diatoms/brown algae on the sand. It makes the tank look filthy, although all the parameters are good. Nitrates at 2 and Phosphates at .025. I'm really hoping the silicates will be high when I test, so that I can maybe put a finger on what is causing the algae.

Test kit arrived today. Water from display shows less than 1. Looks like it is between 0.25 and 0.50. I tested RODI water and it is 0.03. Those numbers are pretty good I think, which is disappointing because that means i still don’t know what’s causing my diatoms/algae

I put the bag of purit in tonite. I left the sand alone to see if I can tell a difference in diatoms over next several days. We shall see

UPDATE .
The Purit media has been in a bag in the sump for almost 3 weeks. There is a noticeable difference in the amount of diatoms/algae on the sand. It is not completely gone, but it is probably at 25-30% of what it was prior to adding the Purit. I'm really wishing I had taken some before/after photos. I have done one water change during that time period. The coral seems to be unaffected by this addition. I still have a few places with GHA, but it is not expanding beyond those spots. Very pleased so far with this product.

Just added some myself 3 weeks ago along with chemipure elite. Same thing on icp, high silicates. Slight brown algae on sand which returns after stirring. I had this issue one other time when adding pvc, frag racks, or acrylic boxes.

it’s slowly getting better. I might order a few more bags to have on hand. Also running a cup or rox.
