just out of curiosity..when buying new livestock shrimp, fish, corals, LR etc... should one QT before placing them in the maintank. The reason i asked is beacuse i know some parasites larvae can hitch a ride not only on fish but on LR and corals as well....should i place corals in a qt tank ? but setting up a QT for corals can be costly with all the required lighting...BTW does anyone know what fungal on fish look like i think my fish has a bad case of fungal

If you want to keep parasites from being introduced to your system, then you should QT corals too. For the lighting, you can use PC lights and just put the corals high in the tank so they get more light.

Most people don't suggest QTing corals. Maybe putting a couple of drops of flat worm exit in the bag. So little is known about coral diseases even Eric Boreman thinks we are just guessing when we try lugols and other solutions. The diseases that we are most afraid of in fish are not actually diseases but parasites. I really don't think their is much to be afraid of when putting in a new coral just make sure you don't get any water from what the coral came in into your main tank. JMO

That's what I've read too, which is why the only way to be 100% sure you don't introduce parasites is to quarantine everything, including corals that have been in a system with fish before, which would include most stuff you buy at the LFS because all their systems are plumbed together.

FW dip is a futile attempt to remove parasite. An online article conducted an experiment placing a yellow tang infested with ich for 18 hrs to no avail. Sorry i couldnt locate the article.

That tang was dead after 18hrs. There is no way it could live in FW that long. The idea of the FW dip is to relive some of the parasites from the gills. The most effective way is to use a FW dip with formalin
.
The only way a fish can get a disease from a coral is if the protozoan parasites are in the 1 - 2 day free swiming part of the 10 day cycle. Bottom line if you want to keep ich out of your tank QT all fish and either buy you fish from a store that keeps all corals in a fishless system or set up a third tank to QT corals in. You can not keep corals in the hospital tank because it has been dosed with copper. Otherwise these protazoans can possibly be present in some of the corals or LR you buy but if you keep the fish in a stress free stable envioroment they will not be infected.
