@Reefaholic: Are you also leaving your invertebrates through a 45-72 day QT?
I wanted to use my frag / grow tank as coral QT and just read it should not have any fish to avoid tomonts or other cross-contamination.
Interestingly, I have also read that a frag tank system has a much successful chance with some fish in it.

I was thinking about using a 20 gallon tank to QT invertebrates, but I assume I would not be able to QT in larger quantities. (Say, 100+ snails) .
Debating... should I remove the fish from my frag / grow out tank(s)?
I have a Coral / Invert QT tank. I have separate hoses and everything labeled Coral / Invert QT so that I do not cross contaminate stuff. Everything that goes into the main tank goes through a 76 day QT. Even then I still feel there's a potential unless I do a 48 hour QT by itself after that. It's a rough life to ensure everything is clean.

One of the big problems with a QT like this is you don't feed it (you forget to) and there are no nutrients in the tank. So I have to mentally tell myself to throw in food every couple days.

So, let's say I want to get some 500 snails and some shrimp. I just get a tank, hob, heater, and a powerhead and just throw them in there for 76 days and just add food every other day?

As for corals... is it OK to just remove the frag plug/disc, few dips, add a new plug/rock, then into frag / grow tank and dip again every week for four weeks?
I will have to remove the small fish I have in there, so just need to watch for any pests and remove before I move into DT 76 days later?

Okay I ordered from here for the first time - I should get my order TR or Fri.

Mostly snails and reef safe crabs.

If you don’t already have Vermetid’s, you should QT because he’s got them. If you do like I did. Let the party begin! :) I actually scrapped mine and dremeled the shell’s. Just wanted to be sure I didn’t introduce another species of Vermetid, but it probably wouldn’t matter anyway. They’re having a party in my tank. :) Lately they seem to be slowing down a little.

The main thing for me was not introducing any of the fish parasites. All my fish are clean and I don’t want any “mysterious deaths.”

You don’t have to QT your inverts from this guy. When there are no fish....there are zero chances of fish parasites. Uronema doesn’t require a fish host, but is really unlikely IMO without any fish in his systems.

I would leave the fish in your coral QT and buy your inverts here from John. No QT needed for his inverts if you’re primary concern is fish parasites.

For other pests like Aiptasia, Vermetid, Limpets, etc. Definitely QT if you have an absolutely sterile tank and do not want to introduce these into your system. Aiptasia are the easiest to deal with for me. Vermetids and Limpets are vertically impossibly to eradicate unless they die off on their own or you dose something that happens to kill them off.

Some people report Vermetid’s dying off by themselves. Others say Coral Snow kills them.

NaNO3, Na3PO4, Amino’s, etc.

QT for 76 days is for Marine ICH only. All the other fish parasites are 4-6 weeks excluding Uronema as it doesn’t not need a fish host to survive. ICH is probably long gone after 6-8 weeks especially if you run temps in a QT 83 or so, but to be safe 72-76 days is the rule and the latter is the absolute worst case scenario based off a cold water study that is ancient.

If you are only concerned about fish parasites then buy from John at reef cleaners. He does not have fish. No fish = No fish parasites. No host. Same goes for AEFW. No Acro’s = No AEFW.

For the other coral pests is best to QT everything. Only introduce Live Tissue into the system. Never any frag plugs unless you absolutely know the source. Try to always cut the corals off and remount them on your own clean plugs. There are a few exceptions, but not many.

What do you have against limpets? They just eat a little coralline here and there lol

They don’t do any harm that I’ve seen other than being annoying and a eye sore. What I don’t like is they crawl up my drain pipes, get on the sump walls. Get behind my frag rack. Congregate under rocks making them difficult to move/slide and sometimes hard to pick up. They multiply rapidly like Vermetid’s.

I use a toothbrush/tweezers to clean the shell. [emoji23]

I have a secondary tank with LR. Will let them run around in that tank before moving to display.

That's a fair point.
Though, I don't think classifying them the same as aiptasia and vermetids is very fair ;)

I’m surprised he didn’t ship Wed the 19th for Friday delivery. He will send you an email, but he will typically not ship too close to a weekend. He likes to ship on Monday or Tuesday so it should be going out today or maybe tomorrow. He’s a pretty consistent dude.

John:

He had a banner on his page that orders would ship on 02/26. I believe he was going to be out for a week or so.

I saw he had something that said “orders placed today will ship Wednesday 2/26.”

So at the latest I think these orders will go out Today - Wednesday. Arriving Friday at latest. I have noticed he loves to ship on Monday & Tuesday. Inverts are usually a 1-2 day delivery I believe.
