Hi y’all, so earlier this week I was assigned a project in English, I have to make an info graph with 20 facts about my topic, and I chose coral bleaching. And I’d love some more help, from people who have been in the hobby longer. Basically all I need if you would like to help me, is for y’all to answer 2 questions, and If you can eleborate a bit.

1. Since you have started in the hobby were you aware of corals dying in ocean? How did you learn about this information? Did you try to do more research to better understand it?

2. What do you think is the main reason for coral bleaching? Why?

If you do take the time to answer that would be awesome, you can either type it in this post or pm it to me. Also, if you do plz leave either you marsh handle or just ur first name and how many years you have been in the hobby.
(Example -
Lucas , 5yrs in the hobby)

Thank you all in advance
Happy reefing!
Lucas

1. Since you have started in the hobby were you aware of corals dying in ocean?

~of course

How did you learn about this information?

~with my eyes

Did you try to do more research to better understand it?

~No, temperature related bleaching episodes.

2. What do you think is the main reason for coral bleaching? Why?

~water temperatures rise, more sensitive coral types die. Some species manage to repopulate, some never die off. Corals that are less vidid (brown) tend to be more resistant to bleaching like porites.

I've seen 1st hand, Marshall islands, Thailand, Maldives, Southern Indonesia. Phillipines and N. Indonesia have not been affected as much as other areas.

Maldives was totally devastated IMO.

1. When i first started the hobby, i’ve noticed a multitude of corals dying in the ocean. My first encounter with said affliction was in 2008 when i snorkeled in the Phillipines. When i flew back to the States, the conservationist in me wanted to do further research and hopefully implemeting a plan to cease further reef degradation.
2.There are numerous concrete evidence as to why corals bleach. I narrowed them down to 3 culprits ; in no particular order. Rising water temperature, bacterial infection, and pollution (waste, sedimentation, etc) All of the aforementioned are major players but I’d venture to say pollution is probably the number one killer of corals in vast number. My reasoning is simple, every year tons of sewage, chemical and other contaminants are dumped into the ocean. There are not enough governing bodies to monitor, curtail , or fine the perpetrators therefore little is done to deter future infractions.

In and out the hobby for roughly 15 yrs :)
