I have a Oceanic 90 Gal with two return nozzles. Should I point them both in the same direction, or in opposite directions? I am trying to maximize water flow. Thank you.

I would also do opposite direction.

What are you using for a return pump?

What additional power heads will you be adding?

What kind of coral do you want to keep?

Return Pump: Mag Drive 12

Power heads: two - Maxi-Jet 1200

Soft corals only.

Thank you.

You might want to think about the Hydor pieces that fit on the end of the Maxi-Jets to divert some of that flow. 1200's move some serious water and might be a bit intense for your softies. Are you running them on a wavemaker to alternate the flow patterns?

i would say...

mag 12 is too big as a return pump for your system. a reef ready 90 only has one overflow (unless modified or not the standard 90). that 1" bulkhead can handle about 600 gph draining. the mag 12 obviously puts out twice the amount the overflow can handle. not to mention, if you are pushing too much flow through your sump, your filtration will not be as effective. how big is your sump?

on my setup, i have a 180 gallon tank and a 70 gallon sump. my return pump is only a mag 9.5. if you are looking for tank circulation, i would suggest you get more powerheads...like the koralia powerheads. the two maxi jet 1200's only put out 295 gph each...so you don't have enough flow.

I second camaroracer. I'm running a mag-7 on my 90 gallon as a return pump.

camaroracer214 you are correct about the Mag 12. After your post I had to take a second look. The pump is a Mag 9.5, the box I have was for a Mag 12. I have heard some good things about the Koralia powerheads. My only problem with them is if you have anemone's how would you keep them from getting sucked in?

Thank you

I have 3 anemones in my 37 gallon and they stay put, no issues what so ever. I have heard of the infamous RBTA smoothies but my anemones have all found a home and haven't moved since the tank was set up.

I picked up 2 Koralia 3 powerheads on the way home and replaced the two maxi-jets. Wow what a difference. I may have to start feeding my fish more food from all the exercise they will be getting swimming in the current.
