I have a 5 gallon tank I was planning to use as a refugium until my 8 year old decided she wanted a pair or green chromis in it. This was a freshwater tank prior to the conversion. What I have done so far is to place some live sand and live rock from my 90 gallon. It has a simple hang on filter. Will this be adequate? Is there anything else I need to do to it? I also have a 20 gallon that my soon to be 6 year old wants in his room. Will a hang on filter be enough or do I need a sump?

Thanks
Ron

The filters should be fine for those tanks. As long as they stay simple, a few fish and maybe a softie or two.

Two chromis are going to beat the crap outta each other in a 5 gallon tank. I'd go with one, and maybe a fish that hangs out more on the bottom, like a small goby.

I have had 2 Chromis in a Eclipse 5 and they were fine. I think that Chomis will be ok. Damsels maybe not so much.

I always liked yellow neon gobies, and then add a scooter blenny, but then I was looking at a smaller tank to.

if you want you can modify a aquaclear filter into a refugium

With smaller tanks you want to make sure you do allot of water changes. I would recommend weekly water changes of at lest 10%. With the HOB filter and water changes you should be OK. Also water the temperature of the tank. The smaller tank temp can swing quite a bit. This will not bother some hearty fish but it is some thing to watch out for. Good Luck and I think you will be fine.

p.s. Watch out for jumpers. In small tanks some fish can get stressed and jump out of the tank. A top of screen on the top of the tank will take care of this

I second the weekly 10% water change. I'd also suggest removing any bio-wheel from the hang on filter. If you have a sponge in it you need to make sure to rinse it out thoroughly every week when you do the water change.
