any body have any snails reproducing in thier tanks? It seems that my turbos are doing so at an alarming rate. I find at least two to three new ones every day. Now I have close to 100 small turbos ranging in size from 1/8" to 1/2". If they continue to grow i'll be looking to get rid of some soon.

are you sure they are turbos?

usually fish eat the babies in the water/larval stage, so i just want to make sure they are not those itty bitty baby snails i find everywhere that are not turbos.. THere is a little snail that reproduces quite well in an aquarium, but they stay really small... and they are not turbos..

reproducing snails

I have a population explosion with stomatella, but they have flattened shells and are most visable after the lights go out. In addition, I have spawning blue-legged hermits. Since I started with 6 and now have over 50, I assume they must be spawning in the tank. I have lots of little shells in the tank so they are able to find shelter. A few bigger ones have negotiated victoriously with some nassarius and astreas.

Do they look like these

These are probably not harmful at all. They are most likely a small species of the Genus Arene (Astrea) or possibly of the Genus Macarene snail. The differences are minute as the two families are closely related. They are perfectly reef safe and will graze film algae at night. In the author's experience, they can reproduce quickly, becoming a small army in a short period of time. See Ron Shimek's post about these snails to the Reefkeepers mailing list here.

If they look like those snails they will only get the size of a pea if you are lucky. I've actually been fishing mine out for mantis food. But they aren't bad to have around.
