I’m have recently purchased a new 180 gallon Planet Aquarium and decided to build the stand and canopy myself.
I opted to go with building a metal stand and finished it today. I want to build in recessed cabinets on both side of the stand with one side being for food, test kit, etc. and the other being an electronics cabinet. The question I have is how deep of a cabinet would be good enough to house power strips such as an Apex and potentially dosing heads? Is 6” deep enough?

Awesome looking stand and very nice metal work. You are a good welder if you did that yourself.
I have a question...and I am asking out of curiosity because physics fascinates me.
Will those 5 points of contact on the floor be sufficient to hold the weight?
I'm guessing total weight between 1600-1800 lbs?

Thank you I did most of the fab work myself but did have one of my welders finish up the gussets and the leveling feet.
As for the supports it’ll be more than sufficient. I have a structural engineer that works for me and he ran some calcs based on a 2500lb load and he said it’ll hold almost double the way I designed this. Each leg is 1-1/2”x 0.125 wall carbon steel and each adjustable foot is rated to hold around 1500lbs.

Excellent build!

I just measured my apex brain and it sticks 3 3/8” off the wall. 6” of clearance would be sufficient for the EB832 including the cables coming off. With a straight plug, that leaves enough room for the cable to bend in the direction it needs to go. As far as any other type of powerhead controllers, etc, nothing would stick out from the wall more than 3”. You should be good to go with 6” of clearance.

Thanks Cody. I want to try and keep as much room in the wet part of the stand. I have a Bashsea SS-48 Sump coming and trying to decide which calcium reactor I want to put in there as well. ATO and auto water change will be run throug the baseboards about 10ft so not having the reservoir in the stand is freeing up room for the calcium reactor.

Next question for the group. Stand is progressing nicely. Especially with the cooler weather after today’s rain. I have built the two 6” cabinets on both sides of the stand. With the sump I currently have (Bashsea SS-48) I only have 12” of free space inside the stand now. Given the tank is 180 gallons Would a 36” sump be a better idea for room inside the stand or is 12” enough room a calcium reactor and other miscellaneous stuff? I am planning on running bio, carbon, and GFO reactors but they will be in the sump. Not running a Refugium on this one and opting for Bashsea’s suite of reactors.

12” would be enough for a calcium reactor and not much else.

Here is the finished product:

coated the metal stand in POR-15. Andthe wood encasement is attached with neodymium magnets. 3/4” plywood for the top and bottom shelf.
