Just wondering how many of you have standby generator installed? How much upfront cost and yearly cost.

Couldn’t find a better time to convince the wife we need one. Considering a 24KW unit for the whole house. Any vendor or electrician recommendations? Thanks

If I were to get one of that size, I would go with the generac hoke standby. This hooks up to your gas line and is installed to run your whole house. Rough guesstimate about $10k installed. Most dealers will also offer a finance option.

You can order them from here but would have to have plumber & electrician to install (unless you have those skills).

This electrician was referred to me by Tesla to install a car charger, while I had him here he added a switch/plug to plug my generator directly into my house breaker box ($250)... saved me in the freeze big time. He also installs generators ..Very Dependable... tell him I sent you.

Yes I think Generac is the only one to offer this size without going into a liquid cooling unit which costs a lot more. I received a quote for $13.5K.

wow... those are $5400 online. you just need to act like General Contractor and get an Master Electrician and a plumber who is familiar with NG. Oh and know that you will face a 1k NG bill if that genny runs for a week or so.

Just get a military gen. If you have the space and it runs off d.i.e.s.e.l fuel... ( I had to make that word like that because I guess the site admins have all words that look like that blocked...) and will run much cheaper in the long run. Those are built like tank literally. MEP 804A is the most sought after unit. I am really pondering getting the 805A version with 30kw of power to run house and shop.

Would be nice if you get a fuel tank skid for it to sit on top of.

There are others that make whole home generators besides the very popular Generac. Look into Kohler, Onan (cummins), Champion power (no persona experience with this one)..... Look up Lime Instruments, there was a guy on FB posting possible discounts for reefers on Generac units.

you happen to have the link handy? I found the fb page for lime instruments but no messages (but then I'm not a big fb user).

Well the good thing about the military gens is the have a pump built in for filling the fuel tank from am external source. So when fule onboard grts low sending unit pulls from the external source and refills. I figure if we get in a crap stoem like ike i will be protected for days with the gen and be sitting pretty.

Yup. I think my issue would be HOA. They are brutal in my subdivision (although it seems to be somewhat selectively so).
I sent an email to my HOA asking what regulations we have. no response yet. Not sure below Texas law means anything to HOA.

Standby Electric Generators, Tex. Prop. Code §202.019: Property owners’ associations may not adopt or enforce a provision that prohibits or restricts an owner from owning, operating, installing, or maintaining a permanently installed standby electric generator as long as they meet applicable safety codes.

Oh yeah for sure on a generac but I would be willing to bet the would squawk about a military style diesel genset. Maybe not if it’s a neutral color on a concrete mounting pad.
