I'm looking for suggestions on a stocking list for a 40b. So far on the list are 2 blizzard clowns and 2 purple fire fish or two regular fire fish and an orchid dotty back along with a starry-eyed blenny

That sounds like plenty to start, especially if you're also going to have a lot of coral. Just make sure if you decide to get a more territorial fish that you add them last

Like Erin said, that's a great place to start. I would only add two at a time as well.

The only change I would do is I would only add one of the clowns and opt for another species of fish in the place of the second clown. Once the clowns mate, whichever turns female will turn into a tank troll and become much more aggressive, given a year or two. A full grown mated pair will claim that entire tank as their own and kill other fish in the tank, in my experience. Better to keep just one clown unless you plan on only keeping clownfish on 1-2 year period.

Skip the dotttybacks. They can be terrors. If you want purple go black cap basslet. The a little pricey but much better fish.

I'd skip the dottyback and go with a basslet as well. Orchid are much nicer than other dottyback but still a dotty. I wouldn't put it with anything of similar color or shape, had one kill two purple firefish in my 40b a couple years ago. They were fine for like 6 months then one day he just ripped them up and they never bounced back.
