The ones taken at the same time seem to be relatively close. I didn't look at the ones taken at different periods because those results don't mean much because they're apples to oranges.

So in the comparison of the two kits from the same time, how do we know which is correct? Other than just accepting that it's true, how do you trust triton over an ICP test? They both seem to be close.

Ehsan wrote the book on testing seawater at this level. The technology may have been around, but from what I understand it’s very difficult to test seawater. He found out how to do it and is probably already a millionaire and by the time it’s done will likely be a very wealthy man. It’s only logical to campare results with the company who’s at the head.

Now.....people see the writing on the wall and wanna get rich too. This is why “all of a sudden” everybody is buying ICP machines. It’s simply not that easy IMO. Kinda gotta know your stuff. As of this moment I feel pretty good about ATI, but not so good about others. Maybe this will change when we see more test results trickle in.

If people like Randy Farley were buying ICP machines- that would alleviate a lot of my stress. :)

Skeptical Reefkeeping 12: Triton Lab ICP-OES Testing of a Certified Artificial Saltwater Standard ? Rich Ross

Interesting read. It gives you insight into exactly how these machines work, and what the results mean. According to the article, triton has some accuracy problems when compared to know concentrations.

I think these tests should probably be treated just the same as an other ICP test. Use them as a general guide, and don't take the numbers to be absolutes. Like I said before, if your step you is reading 6ppm, then you're probably fine. If it's reading 2ppm, then you should probably dose a little. However, if with a standard donation of variance of accuracy, they can be useful guides for monitoring trends in our tanks that we otherwise wouldn't have access to.

I like Richard Ross because he’s the only guy I can think of that keeps his PO4 at 2.0-3.0! :bounce:

As far as Triton goes, I haven’t heard of them being inaccurate. Randy likes Triton and that’s enough for me. :biggrin1:

Randy used to argue with Ehsan of Triton on a daily basis regarding his methodology. Then all of a sudden he stopped... Seemed really odd. My spidey senses were definitely tingling on that one. [emoji4]

In the end, the results are only as good as the person running and calibrating the equipment and developing the testing SOPs.

I've sent in annual Triton tests every year to monitor trends on my system for the last 4 years. I don't take their values over my home treat kits though... Just see how it matches up to the previous year.

I won a test kit for ICP via the photo contest. I'll be sending a sample in this week to see how it stacks up to my Triton test a couple months back. Not too much should be different since I don't do water changes.

I'll report my results when I get them.

Well I think the point of the thread was just to provided a major step up from the home tests most of us do, as well as test for roughly 15 elements with laboratory grade testing equipment... We can’t test these things at home. Figured it would be a nice gesture for our members who choose to support our club. If you would rather spend $18 instead $50 and get comparable result, then we have provided an avenue for our supporting members.

If my results are within agreeable margins of error, I'll definitely be taking advantage of the $18 tests for sure! I might even test more than 1x a year at that point.

Yeah I'm thinking about sending one off once a month or maybe every two months. Depends on how busy I am with work and life, but in a work free world, I'd do a test per month. With good notation of changes within the reef, that might give some insight into the results of the changes we do to our tanks. Either way, I think this is a great value to our members.

Just that it’s a perk... a discount for our supporting members and that we have them available.

What are you trying to say man?!

He's trying to tell you to renew your dang membership, duh! Haha

But seriously, our community can't do hardly any of the things that we do without supporting members and sponsors. We appreciate everyone's support in helping us help the community. These test kits were just one way that we wanted to give our community access to a premium product at an affordable price that they otherwise wouldn't have gotten. No more, no less. These are all sold at cost, and frankly, Gregg is the one that will ship your test kit to you the same day that you buy it. He hustles for the members all the time in many ways that even I don't see until after the fact.

but seriously, that feature has not been available to non-supporting members for as long as Ive been in the club. Maybe it was there before but that was before my time.

One way I can help you and others put that edit button back is to remind you that currently MARSH is matching new member fees and donating the total to CRF! You pay $30 and we will donate $60, you pay $40 and we will donate $80! That gets you your edit button back, a major discount on ICP test while supplies last, it helps the CRF... and a list of other things you can see here. PLUS, ill mail you out a nice custom welcome letter that will include your beautiful member card as well as a couple of other surprises. Don"t pass up this great opportunity. Heck ill even get cody to come clean your tank!
