Eh... what happens to everything afterwards? Is a pool filtration system capable of maintaining a reef environment? Gotta add industrial size skimmers and UV etc. etc. those guys did not strike me as fully prepared. Sort of like a social media stunt?

My only question is... that much space and they didn’t put some large angelfish, triggers, orange shoulder tangs, etc? They went with a yellow tang instead? Lame. Probably not a permanent situation or something that was entirely thought through because they would’ve at least chosen more fitting stock if they were serious

I did see an emperor angel swim in front of the camera at one point. But you’re right. And of course there have been past discussions on rc about exactly this.. turning a pool into a reef lmao..

Dude, when I was at my apartment before I got this house, they had a saltwater pool. I ALWAYS thought about turning a pool into a reef tank. My lottery dream is an elevated reef pool that’s covered and lit by the sun. I want to scuba dive in a reef whenever I want.

Pool pumps and filter media are able to handle a reef environment. Standard pool pump motors would have a shortened lifespan due to corrosion on the impeller shaft, unless they put an upgraded one in that uses stainless steel. Moody Gardens uses upgraded pool pumps for all of their tanks in the QT building.

As for the filtration, any of the three types of filters available Sand, Cartridge, or DE will work. A sand filter would be ideal as they would provide the lowest amount of overall maintenance. Sand filters pull out particles from 20-40 microns much better than most home aquarium filtration, can easily be back washed to clean them, and provide the perfect environment for nitrifying bacteria to thrive in. Cartridge is OK but would need to be pulled out regularly and hosed off, but they do filter down to about 11 micron. DE filters are the best at 1-2 micron, however require the most work. A DE filter would keep the water incredibly clean, but would require backwashing very frequently as with the level of particulate from all those fish, it would get clogged up extremely fast.

I would love to do that with our pool!

I'm asking the wife but pretty sure I know the answer

Noooo pool maintenance too easy. If I ever convert our pool it would be a nice koi pond but for now we are enjoying the pool.

We went on one of those koi club pond tours years ago, and two of the houses had swimming pool koi ponds. One was a pretty typical backyard pool, and the other was a spectacular setup with a fully enclosed pool and several other ponds. I've often dreamed of doing this or a reef with our pool, but I think we will keep it as-is.

Sounds fun and I thought about it when I had a pool, but I would think the cost of maintaining, temp control, algae control in Houston (unless it's indoors), you'd make out better with a dive trip every year, also get a nice TS downpour and your salt will go out of whack. I'd have to charge admission to have people see it.

that was my very first thought... "better get a chiller" haha..

although, i have been harping on this for many years now, i would like to understand why people who build pools don't incorporate geothermal temp control into the design. seems like a nobrainer.
