I normally spend an hour or two per day talking shop about reef tanks but I’ve been out of town lately and haven’t had the chance. What’s going on with your tank? Doing well? Why? Failing? Why?

Think I need to send in my RO water. Have some smaller issues that I think are created from water source.

Silicates at .3. Added a silicates buster from spectrapure as the 6th stage in my filtration. Added some bags of chemipure to the tank and the 80g of water change water to see if it drops on next months ICP test.

also swapped out the kamoer feed for a versa. since my alk consumption is lower in the am, I am setting two programmed speeds: 25-30ml in the am and 70+ml in the afternoon. Pro tip: ETM won’t allow you to set multiple programs using continuous mode! You have to take desired speed in ml/min and then multiply by hours at the speed for a total ml used and build the schedule using custom mode. E.g. 12:45p - 10:15p 40,000ml dosed and then it will give you a ml/min figure.

Struggling to keep No3 up but at the same time keeping PO4 low. Tested Thursday and was at 2ppm No3 and .26ppm Po4 where previously was in the .1-.15 range with GFO so brought out the big guns (sea klear).

Dripped .5ml in 32oz of RO into a 1micron filter sock on Friday and dropped it to .16, and the stupidly decided to go it again on Saturday but used my 10micro sock instead.

Ended up dropping Po4 to .06 which pissed off all my Acros that now have mostly browned out (thankfully no STN or RTN) and very likely killed my tangs from the precipitate.

So not the best week, and now due to the fish losses I have to dump my skimmate back into the tank to keep No3 from bottoming out which is brining the Po4 back up again.

Sounds like you’ll be feeding less.

the old saying, nothing good happens fast in this hobby.

sorry to hear about the fish.

Did the silicate buster work?

I know someone here in town that accidentally overdosed a phosphate precipitate and now he keeps his softball sized colony of home wrecker on his front porch.

Had to remove a large Ricordia from a rock because it was killing part of my JF Burning Banana stylo. Not very easy. I lucked out one night looking with a red flashlight and its foot was not as fully attached to the rock as normal, so was able to get a finger under it. Even with that slight advantage and being as careful as I could, I still damaged its foot more than I expected. It is recovering in an acclimation box, and I think it will be ok.

I have lost 5 Acros since the freeze, mostly weeks or months after so I don't know if they were stressed and just took a while to suddenly die overnight, or if it has nothing to do with the freeze. I did an ICP test, and the only thing flagged was low strontium, which from what I read on R2R from Randy Holmes-Farley is not that important.

I believe I'm experiencing a dino outbreak. Microscope will be arriving tomorrow to confirm it. I keep pretty low nutrients in the display so it only makes sense that it's dinos.

My new QT Frag tank lights and power head are coming in Friday.

I need to gut my display. There are some trash polyps growing everywhere plus blue clove polyps got in somehow. I plan on using the medicine to kill the blue clove polyps but that means catching and moving all my inverts to another tank so they don’t die. Wanna come help?!

This is what I use to dose nitrates. Very cheap and effective.

How many fish do you have in your 75 gallon? Have you tried adding more fish and feeding more to boost nutrients? Also, I would worry about the microscope. Everyone’s tank has Dino. The difference is whether the conditions are ideal for the Dino to thrive. For that matter, your corals produce about 95%+ of their energy via a symbiotic relationship with an internal dinoflagellate algae.

For what it’s worth, I thought I had the same dreadful dino outbreak until I pulled out some of the “red strings” on the sandbed. Turned out to be spider worms and I was so relieved! Like a ton of bricks lifted.

I hope it’s not the big d and if it is, best of luck!!!
