i haven't used it, both the tamron 90mm and the nikkor 105mm are awesome lenses and are generally highly regarded. Theres an older nikon 105mm on craiglist right now for 350 i think. Here's a link to some user pictures from pixtus. Are you considering the older nikon 105mm D or the newer nikon 105mm G?

I don't think I want to buy any used camera lenses unless they are from someone I personal know. I want to get the new Nikon lense but with half the price , the tamron has very good reviews.

What are you planning on shooting? Corals? Do you have a decent tripod yet? Buying used lenses can save you a ton of money. Just buy from someone reputable, and test out the lens first.

A few things to mention about both lenses, the Nikon 105mm G has very good vr, i believe it's the newer version and can provides up to 4 stops. The tamron doesn't have vr. But in my opinion a macro lens is generally seldom used, you're better off getting something cheap.

I believe d2mini has the Tamron 90mm. I think he referenced using it for most of his macro shots in his reef central thread.

I plan to shoot corals, fish, bugs , flowers and portrait with this macro lens.

First thing would probably be to get a solid tripod. I recommend either the manfrotto 055xprob or the 190xprob. Th center shaft can actually be used sideways, and the tripod can get really low for those bug/flower shots. If you want more info I can do a video or pictures.

Next in line is a ring flash, you're going to find shooting wide open a bit limiting. Shooting at f9+ is generally recommended for macro use, but then you need more light. That's where a ring light comes in handy. I always cheap'd out and used my flashes with modifiers. Ring flash depends on what you're shooting and how much time you got.
