Hey everyone, my wife and I have been very seriously thinking of moving out your way. We’ve got friends and family in Dallas, Cypress, Montgomery, and Corpus Christi. We’ve taken multiple trips out there and will be heading back next month to look at Tomball, Town Lake, and some other areas. Our focus is good schools for our kids and community.

It looks like we’ll be pulling the trigger at the end of the school year. Possibly sooner if our crazy state doesn’t let our kids back in school.

I’ve been very slowly building a 90gallon system since March of last year. It’s a custom build from Glass Cages out of Memphis and the stand/canopy I did at our metal fabrication facility. I’ll be bringing it out with me for its first venture at getting stocked. It’s my first saltwater aquarium in about 10 years so I’ll be looking for guidance. I found you guys on R2R. Where I live now there are just a few shops and their pool of knowledge seems to be very shallow. Plus there is zero reefing community. I look forward to see what you guys are doing out there and hopefully learn and contribute.

Thanks for hearing my rant and if you ask where I’m eventually moving from, you’ll probably ban me from the forum. I’d do the same :)

Welcome to the area. I live in the back of the Woodlands which is moderately close to Cypress. Good schools here and Cypress. We have 2 fish stores pretty close. The one on I-45 is a chain with locations in Houston, Austin, and Dallas. They set up my 40 gal AIO a few months ago and have been helpful when I go into the store and ask questions. There is another store off 242 that is owned by husband and wife team and they are knowledgeable in my opinion but I’m very new to the hobby so take that into consideration.

Thanks for the warm welcome and info Rob! We’re not out there yet but looking forward to it.

Welcome to MARSH! My address is Conroe, but my property taxes go to Montgomery schools, and I'm right near The Woodlands. There is a pretty good number of active members on the north side of town, in addition to the two good fish stores mentioned.

Hi and Welcome to Marsh!

I live one freeway exit away from technically living in Spring, but you can't beat the proximity to I-45 and the HRT. Sadly I would not recommend the Aldine ISD and I would caution you to use your best discerning judgement when it comes to Spring ISD. My younger kiddos attend a private school, but my older 2 attended public school. While there was a huge advantage to the public HS they attended, I wouldn't attend the HS otherwise. I have heard alot of great things about Klein and Tomball school districts.

As for LFS (Little Fish Stores), we have many wonderful stores, you can see many of them in our Sponsor section. Being in Houston also means you will have a front row seat to Reef Currents! We recently upgraded venues after outgrowing our last location. We bring in vendors from across the US as well as nationally renowned speakers...and let's not forget the raffle!

The MARSHian community is amazing! You will meet some amazing people here, very knowledgeable, friendly, generous, and helpful!

Thanks for reaching out, we look forward to following along on your journey!

Welcome! I was in the same predicament when evaluating where to move for my son's education. Ultimately, I chose Katy. Their school system is consistently ranked top in Houston and surrounding areas. I know it's not on your list, but take a look. Btw, you can't go wrong with Town Lake. If you do explore Katy, I recommend Cinco Ranch or near 99 and i10.

Thanks everyone! I’m amazed at the response to my post already. I appreciate the recommendations, keep them coming. I’ll definitely be referencing this thread when we’re out there.

Our kids ages are all over the place. 17(Senior), 11(6th grade), 4, and 2. The goal was to get out there after our oldest graduates HS but that plan could be accelerated.

We were planning on checking out Bridgeland, Katy, and a few others that I can’t remember.

Also, I appreciate the PM’s and realtor referrals. Right now we’ve got a realtor but it’s always good to have a few (at least) backups. Especially if it’s your significant other and he/she endorses your reefing hobby!

If you are looking for the best schools for your kids, you have to look at Katy ISD, ranked #1 in many places. Niche.com is a good website to start at. As for LFS, sadly there's only one in the area, small and the hours are not very friendly. I find myself driving out to Spring and visiting That Aquarium Place as my favorite place! There are many in the Houston area, but in my opinion, TAP is a step above the rest.

Also consider where you are going to work. Houston is big and spread like LA and your commute can be miserable if you work on end and live on the other.... ;)

Welcome to the area! Are you from Portland, Oregon or San Francisco? :)

You’re not too far off! My wife and our two youngest are making a trip this Thursday-Sunday to check out Katy, Spring, Tomball, and I cant remember where else. We still don’t know exactly when we’re going to take the leap but starting to narrow down cities.

As someone that was born and raised in Spring, TX, I would say the three nicest suburb areas are Katy, Cypress, and The Woodlands areas. All have more expensive homes as well, so the schools are better funded and probably better than Spring or Tomball. Katy is flat with few trees (used to be rice farms years ago from what I understand), and The Woodlands lives up to their name (a planned community that started decades ago and didn't knock down every tree in sight to make building easier), so I prefer living here. Cypress doesn't have a lot of trees either, which I don't like. However, The Woodlands is kind of its own bubble. There's a lot of oil money here, similar to Katy. The Woodlands has a really nice river walk/Lake Woodlands, which is nice. I live in The Woodlands area now (technically I'm in Spring but I'm in Montgomery county, not Harris, and the local school districts are Conroe ISD, which encompasses The Woodlands). I'll pm you my number if you want to text me for some ideas on how to explore the north side, which I'm more familiar with.

As far as fish stores, we have plenty all over town, and the majority of them are our sponsors. If you become a supporting member, then we will send you that sweet, sweet membership card that get's you 10% off purchases from most of our sponsors, free access to the 3 top of the line Apogee PAR meters, access to many exclusive events, etc. We like to give our members a lot of bang for their buck! Welcome aboard!

Moved from spring to Gulfgate, that sucked. Then I use to live in cypress, I absolutely hated it. Moved to west chase district that was ok. Then lived in energy corridor for 2 years loved it. I'm over at Jersey Village now getting pulled over for exiting a highway at 50mph. Area is fairly cheap and traffic is not so bad now that 290 is done. I'd still rather be out in Katy or the Woodlands with all those suburban house wifes though :meow:
