I know many of you think that Tropic Marin salt is too expensive. I hear ya, but I still like using it. So this post is really for the folks that use the Tropic Marin Pro-Reef Salt Mix or have been considering testing it out. The last time I bought salt I ended up making the mistake of buying the Tropic Marin Classic Sea Salt Mix instead of the Pro-Reef mix. I don't normally test alk, calcium, and magnesium for my fresh salt water mix but since I bought the Classic version I wanted to know how much I needed to adjust the fresh saltwater as to not make big changes or drops in my tank parameters when I do the next water change. Tropic Marin states that alk, calcium, and magnesium should be around 9-10 dKH, 380 ppm and 1260 ppm respectively for the Classic mix.

When I tested the first batch of fresh saltwater, I found a pleasant surprise. Here's what I measured for the Classic mix:

Salinity: 1.026
Alk: 9.6 dKH (Hanna)
Calcium: 450 ppm (Red Sea)
Magnesium: 1440 ppm (Red Sea)

This matches almost exactly what I keep my tank parameters at. I will test each batch of saltwater for each water change to make sure there is consistency. So FYI for those that use Tropic Marin Pro-Reef Salt. As an option to the Pro-Reef salt, it's looking like The Classic version has also reef like parameters for alk, calcium, and magnesium...AND, it is slightly cheaper at BRS.

Confirming salinity here as that makes a difference also. I’m assuming it’s at 35ppt or 1.026 that you mixed at?

That's interesting, I'm always dosing a little all for reef after every water change to bring the alk closer to 8. Wonder why the classic mixs so much higher

Yeah, I was super surprised everything was as high as it was. Before I mixed up the first batch of saltwater I even pulled the bag out of the bucket to ensure the salt was all mixed up itself. Had some Red Sea salt once mix up differently as I continued to use it so I wanted to make sure that this bucket hadn't stratified during shipping.

That is interesting to know. I always use Pro, but will keep this in mind if I every decide to try classic.

I will likely go back to the Pro now that BRS has a good supply in stock once I go through this bucket of Classic. But it's nice to know that that the Classic can be a good fall back for when the Pro is out of stock. Also keep in mind that the Pro has the additional trace elements that the Classic version does not. Not sure if that's a big deal or not.

It is suppose to have higher parameters
Alkalinity - 8 dKH (approx)

Calcium - 440 ppm (approx)

Magnesium - 1350 ppm (approx)
