We at MARSH are proud to announce our Tank of the Quarter program

we will start the receiving entries in December for the March 2016 TOTQ!!

TOTQ Guidelines

1/ Objectives:
This program gives a chance for our members and guests to share their tanks with other members be it a Nano, Large Reef tank or Fish Only tank, etc... We want to make it clear this is not so much a competition but a learning experience for everyone and a chance to show off your hard work.

2/ Who can participate in the TOTQ program?
-
All MARSH members and local MARSH guests.
- If you have several tanks (large reef, nano, etc..), you can submit them as separate entries for a TOTQ contest.
- You can submit, re-submit your tank pics for the TOTQ contests as many times as you want. Once your tank wins Marsh TOTQ, you will have to wait at least 6
months to re-submit the same tank for another Marsh TOTQ contest.

3/ What & Where to submit?
- You only need to submit
one FULL TANK SHOT (FTS)of your tank initially. This FTS will be used for the voting.
- Send your images to
leeag77@yahoo.com

- Once your tank is selected (by votes), you will be notified and asked to submit your tank information and more pictures for the TOTQ article (see "7 - Information needed for TOTQ Article" below)

4/ TOTQ selection:
- TOTQ will be selected by Marsh members through voting. A vote or poll with the submitted pics (again FTS only)
- If there are too many submissions for one month, the TOTQ committee head will pre-screen the entries to select the top 10 tanks for the public vote.
- If there is a tie in the TOTQ vote, the submission date (by email date) will be used as the tie-breaker.

5/ Deadline:
- The deadline for TOTQ submissions will be the 15th day of each month in March, June, September, and December.
we will announce the winner the last day of those 4 months.

6/ Winner prizes:
- MARSH Members who win TOTQ will receive a price worth ~$20 or more from a TOTQ Sponsor. Sponsors will be announced one month in advance.
- MARSH Guests who win TOTQ will receive a free MARSH one year membership.

7/ Information needed for TOTQ Article:
- Once your tank is chosen for TOTQ, you will be notified and asked to submit your tank info and more pics for the TOTQ article.

- For the tank info, you may either answer the questions in a Q/A format or in an article format (use past TOTQ articles as a guidelines):
1. Introduction/History of system
2. Inhabitants
3. Feeding
4. Filtration
5. Circulation
6. Lighting
7. Parameters
8. Equipment
9. Maintenance

- For the pictures:
- We can use up to ~ 20-30 pics of your tank for the article. These can be closeup pics, pics of fishes, softies, LPS, SPS, inverts, etc.. You should include some equipment pics like lighting system, refugium, frag tank, skimmer, etc...

8/ Others:
- Entry for TOTQ program MUST be submitted by the owner of the tank.
- The tank pics (FTS and other pics) must be taken within the last 3 months from the date the tank is submitted for the TOTQ contest.
- Pictures of livestock or equipment submitted for TOTQ article must be taken from the TOTQ winner's tank.
- You can refer a MARSH Member to the TOTQ Committee. We will then contact the referred person about submitting their tank.

If you have any questions or suggestions please post them here for the TOTQ Committee to review.

Thank You
TOTM Committee

It might help if we had a dedicated tank build forum.
The tank builds tend to get lost in the general discussion.

Also, the way the TOTM was usually run was by people entering themselves into the contest.
I think a lot of people don't enter because they don't feel like their tank is worthy or ready yet.
Might be better to have the mods look though the tank builds (another good reason to have a dedicated space) and pick one.
Or pick a few for the members to vote on.
You could make some stipulations if you want your tank considered, like making at least one update that month.

Just some thoughts.

I think that a dedicated build forum would not only be essential for this to work, but would also be nice for those looking to just go through build threads. I haven't decided if submissions for TOTM/TOTQ would be better or to just just have some board members select a few that we would then vote on. Anyway, I think that doing it quarterly would be much better than once a month. Once a month would be too frequent to get people to get behind it.

I think having a totm would be a great idea. Before I moved here the last board I was on had the totm show up on as a picture above the threads. Then if you wanted to see more you could click on the tank and there would be a special writeup, not just a link to a build thread. It was like a interview writeup, many times written by the tank builder and their significant other when there was one.

This would be my wife's write up...

"Here's his tank. It could have been a POOL!!!"

The TOTM proposal would be a fantastic way to recognize forum members dedication to the hobby….I wonder if any of our friendly local vendors would be interested in sponsoring the monthly competition with gift cards/merchandise…and they can use the TOTM to advertise on their website, etc.

I'll second Cody's idea…a dedicated build sub-forum would be a perfect way to catalogue/archive the various build threads. As a novice aquarist, I find build threads to be very educational, inspirational (and at times entertaining).

Ajajajajaj...you nailed it. Only some of our systems cost that much... My wife's dad's pools saltwater and ever time im there all I can think about is the reef I could create in there... or the tank I would have bought instead.

Guys,
here is my idea, TOTM threads are going to die in all forums. Monthly is too much.
I think it should be done every two month or once a quarter.
An idea would be to have a monthly category sequentially repeated.

Example - Larger Reef Tank, Nano Reef Tank so every other month a different group of freaks (sorry, lol) can post and prepare their tanks.

What you guys think?

I think what he said is not only a good idea, but also a necessity. It would be exhausting, not only to whoever is running it, but also to the members. A tank of the quarter is plenty enough. If not, it will become a burden and not a pleasure very quickly.

That's why I put in the pool last year and made sure the wife knew I delayed setting up the tank because of that. Now she does not say much about the new tank. It helps that my little daughter and son love the tank even though there are only a few fish in it currently.

This would be my wife's write up...

"Here's his tank. It could have been a POOL!!!"

Yes, think so too. Do it once a quarter, and if so many Nano's are here interested you can make 1 Nano and 1 regular Tank together, so there is no fight.
But DO NOT start before mid Februar, so I can get my tank back in excellent shape !!!!!!!!!
