Alright,

So I bought a used Bubble Magus curve 5 skimmer. Did a bunch of research and found this to be a decent option. Watched a bunch of reviews and pulled the trigger on a used unit.

I got excited and wanted to test it out, so I filled my tub and dropped the skimmer in.

I was very disappointed with the size of the bubbles produced. I thought maybe it was the venturi so I hunted one down on line (found one place that had them) after trying to clean it with no results and decided to buy a back up pump while I was there.

Got the package of parts today, and installed the new venturi thinking this would fix the issue. No joy. Put the new pump in thinking that was the problem. No joy. Its producing large bubbles no matter what in mess with.

What am i missing? (Realize the photo probably does nothing to help.) Do skimmers work differently in fresh water?

This is my 5th BM never had an issue with bubbles like your experiencing. You would need to run it in saltwater with proteins to skim to see the full effect.... I could be wrong. Happy Reefing! This is mine working overtime putting out some heavy stuff....

Few things to consider... it needs to be broken in, it needs to be in a cycled tank with livestock, make sure the bubbler plate is on properly, the pump outlet should strike the part of the plate that has no holes. If the holes are over the outlet then you’ll get big bubbles.

Check your water level . Skimmers have a depth line that it can't pass . So when you eventually place in tank keep that in mind . You may need to make a skimmer stand. Pictures doesn't help much try recording it

Yeah, I had the bubble plate on correctly and I tried different depths. I'm sure it's the fact that it was not in saltwater when I tested it. There is a reason protein skimmer are not on the fresh water side. Thanks all. I'll let you know if it self corrects when I have my system up and running
