Hi Gang,

Great presentation about feeding Tubastraea (Orange Cup Coral) at the meeting last night!

I'd mentioned after the presentation that Orange Cub Corals can be found in Texas waters - so here's some photos! I took these shots on a rig-dive near the Flowergarden Banks National Marine Sanctuary:

And some close-ups:

Offshore in the Gulf, the tubastraea stay open during the day because of the strong steady current that brings them plankton and other food.

Hope you enjoy!

Awesome pics as usual from you, James. These are such beautiful corals and as demanding as they are they are some of the most incredible and who knew right in our own backyard.

Great shots!!!

Do you have any in your tank from the gulf? I have seen a nice birdnest coral(white) on the rig legs with arrow crabs and golden shrimp inside of it.
Let me know wheen you want to dive again I have offshore boat rigged for diving.

Collecting of CITES App II corals from the Gulf is forbidden. That includes basically any coral w/ a hard bodied skeleton (scleractinia). Octocorals like gorgonians are allowed to be collected, provided you follow the regulations.

Sincerely,
James

Nice photos James. Thanks for sharing them with us. I want more about your Gulf trips. Maybe another meeting topic?

Thanks!

Beautiful pics ~ I had no idea we had such beautiful corals
in our own waters. I really like the second picture where
it looks like the beautiful red w/white polyped
(gorgonian?) is fighting for survival under that sponge.
Is that this:

I bought this beauty a couple of years ago
without understanding its feeding demands
and it didn't last too long in my tank.
Hmmm, I wonder if Cyclop-Eeze would work?

Hi Sherri,

They are similar, but I think the one you posted is an indo-pacific species.

Definitely non-photosynthetic as you can tell from the white polyps.

Cheers
James
