Pretty much u pay for what ur getting
Thank you for bringing that up. That's the purpose of this thread. People are not getting what they paid for. Often times, new hobbyist get caught up in the hype, and haven't done a lot of research. Unfortunately, not all vendors are as wonderful as our sponsors. There are a lot of unscrupulous sellers on the internet. There is this guy selling rainbows for $350 each and calling them "Arizona Sunset."

I totally agree. The nem I posted the pic for with green tips... I was told it was an Inferno and I paid $150 for it. I didn't know much about Rainbow BTAs when I bought it and it turns out I very likely paid a high price for a really pretty Rainbow. You make a very good point. Shame on them...and shame on me for not knowing any better. With all of the different BTAs out there they all just look so similar to me. I actually did look up some pictures of what an Inferno looked like and I guess I convinced myself that what I was buying looked like the pictures I found. Lesson learned. And thanks for creating this thread! This is really good discussion! And BTW, I was put in contact with the seller through MARSH. So be careful out there!

Could be that the seller was misinformed as well. lol. I hate this stuff...
LOL, it's been my experience that most sellers deep down inside know what they are unloading. If you fully disclose and they still want to buy a pretty coral, it doesn't matter what you call it or how much you charge. Basic supply and demand.

For example, I bought an anemone a few years ago. It doesn't have any pink or purple tips. The tentacles are bright orange with a green mouth. The guy that sold it to me told me it was an "ultra rainbow." Frankly, I've never even heard of an ultra rainbow. Nor have I seen a rainbow that looked that bright. He could have easily told me it was a Chicago Sunburst and lied about lineage. He didn't. For that, I have so much respect for him.

The whole issue with all of this confusion is getting away from scientific naming. Much more so in the coral space.

Honestly if I buy a coral from someone I pretty much trust them on the Marketing Name. I am NOT going to check if Joe’s grandma bought it from Larry’s sister who got it from... well you get the idea.

This hobby has gotten way too commercialized with gold diggers looking to make a quick buck. I think it’s pretty stupid and selfish and sad.

Ok stepping down from soap box now. Sorry.

Thank you for voicing your thoughts. It's one of my biggest pet peeves as well. It really has been commercialized.

That's why I usually just buy coral from trusted vendors like Jason or TSA.

I don't get the price gouging on anemones. I remember some guy paid 1400 for a anemone at an LFSs anniversary a year back. I thought he was insane. I'm really thinking that alot of this is a fad, like jinco jeans and pokemon.

I'll stick with my cheap stuff.

Hmmm .. love the enthusiasm, but no LOL. They are gorgeous, but 4 figures is next level marketing hype. I remember a half inch nub of Walt Disney going for $600! Now that is silly.

And if you can find one that looks different under blue light you can sale it as a multicolored cosmic gem for $10k. [emoji2957]
