I've been using a digital device since January. Pretty happy with it, I just use the calibration fluid it came with. As for my standard refractometer, I have to confess I just bring it to one of my favorite LFS stores and have them calibrate it for me. Always gives me a great excuse to do some shopping [emoji41]

BRS solution and their no name refractometer as well. I've had it for maybe four years. Only ever needed to adjust it once. Couldn't be happier with it.

Distilled water or RODI works, but definitely needs to be cross checked. Technically, we need to calibrate to 35 PPT since this is were we keep our water. I need to find a good lab grade solution.

Imagine if Randy Farley develovped a product like this and then came out with a peer reviewed paper on it. He’d be rich in the first 2 years. :tape:

Been there, done that. Hanna’s new salinity checker and its calibration fluid. So easy and convenient. Calibrate once a month.

Haven't gotten my hands on one of those yet. Haven't heard if they're reliable yet, but it sounds like you're liking it.

So far it’s been reliable for me. I know it’s way more reliable than my refractometer. By the time I calibrate and wipe off fluid I need to recalibrate it again.

Apparently temperature plays a big role in reading salinity on a refractometer. How do yall make sure the temp is consistent when measuring? I noticed when i touch the refractometer to my hand to warm it up the reading differ by up to 2ppt

Mine reads temp as well, but I never look at it or do anything special. I just calibrate the meter (when I have fluid) and never have issues.

Most refractometers are ATC (Automatic Temperature Compensation) so you really shouldn't need to worry about temperature unless yours isn't ATC.

As far as calibration I buy pre-calibrated solution every once in a while which is at 1.026 and I use that to ensure it's still at 1.026. I don't think I've ever had to adjust it.
