I never Knew...

WOW...thanks for the tips and samples of what to collect. I never knew all those inverts were along the coast. Silly I know but Galveston is so dirty I just think of it as devoid of life. Thanks again and can't wait to collect.

I do not think they are allowing people on the seawall yet. Also with all the debris and oil from boats and stuff i would dought there would be much to collect right now.

I was just wondering how things are fairing out. I have also been wondering about the collection of refugium macroalgae as I know you can get sargassum and possibly black mangroves I have been wondering what all may be left there macroalgae wise to collect. I have been thinking about setting up a couple of large outdoor tanks.

Hi, OceanDweller.
In the Galveston Bay complex, there is no macroalgae worth collecting for a refugium. I've often wondered why, my best guess is that the water isn't clear enough to support macro growth. As far as sargassum, it shows up in the spring and summer. I and many others have tried growing it without success. Maybe we keep our tanks too "clean" for sargassum? I believe you can find black mangroves further down the coast, but I've not seen any in the Galveston Bay complex.

Good luck,
Steve

I have been collecting grass shrimp by a underwater palm tree... great fish food. Also some pods and fish fry there.

As far as pepperment shrimp- are they reef safe. I thought i read they would pick at something

I live in League City and have purchased a net for gathering Pods and Mysis. Can someone tell me a method to clean the mysis to make certain I don't introduce anything bad to the main tank? bacteria, disease, etc?

If you have a Lawnmower Blenny, they DO NOT like the Naked Gobies! I dropped three into my tank, the two small ones get chased a little there and there, but one large one equal size to my Blenny was being beat to hell, luckily he hid in a upper corner and was easy to pull out and get into the sump.

wait till the water warms up a little...maybe march timeframe and you should be able to pull all kinds of ************ out of the water pretty much no matter where you go...question is: what is it and will it kill your tank

Everything I got from Galveston ended up getting removed but a few rock anemones. Naked Gobies were all killed by my Lawnmower Blenny. Sergeant Majors never made it into my display tank, peppermint shrimps made a snack out of my Hammer Frag and were removed.

They are all good if you have a seperate small tank set-up.

I wasn't planning on going until April or so anyway. I plan on setting up a 30 gal Gulf of Mexico biotope with things that I collected from the Gulf. I'm at 'Gorda once or twice a month.
