Mark, I believe that snail you have listed as a whelk is a Murex, but I can't remember if a murex is a whelk. I know lightning whelks look different. Bpth species are predators of other snails.
The hermits are really great hair algae eaters. I have a few in my main FOWLR tank since it had a really bad bloom when it was first set up, but it has high nutrients with the cory cats and trigger. Also, if you don't have any snails, lightning whelks are neat to have. I used to feed mine fish chunks every so often. It was really cool to put the fish in the water and let the oils smell up the water... then all of a sudden you would see this snails emerge from the sand bed and haul bootie to find the source of the smell. I would then make the snail come and get it on the glass so I could watch it eat. Pretty interesting.. in a geeky kind of way.
