Mark, I believe that snail you have listed as a whelk is a Murex, but I can't remember if a murex is a whelk. I know lightning whelks look different. Bpth species are predators of other snails.

The hermits are really great hair algae eaters. I have a few in my main FOWLR tank since it had a really bad bloom when it was first set up, but it has high nutrients with the cory cats and trigger. Also, if you don't have any snails, lightning whelks are neat to have. I used to feed mine fish chunks every so often. It was really cool to put the fish in the water and let the oils smell up the water... then all of a sudden you would see this snails emerge from the sand bed and haul bootie to find the source of the smell. I would then make the snail come and get it on the glass so I could watch it eat. Pretty interesting.. in a geeky kind of way.

Just got back from Marsh

Me and my girlfriend (Samiam) just got back from the Marsh. We really didn't know what we were doing but we went anyway. We didn't bring much back because we didn't really know what we should keep. Here are a few pics of what we got.

We caught some Ghost shrimp. - any suggestions on how to keep them until we want to feed them to the tank ?

We found the snails - I can see that these probably aren't very good for the tank as they don't seem to want to stay in the water.

We also got some Hermit crabs - I don't want to put these in my tank, but if I want to put them in the refugium should we clean off their shells ?

Going down there was a fun thing to do. I would be interested in hearing about the other locations to collect at and collection techniques. All we used was our normal fish nets. Seems like we should of had some sort of sane net.

Those snails mostly stay out of the water. I have some in my tank for observation and they have not done much. I'll throw them down in the tank and they come right back to the top.

I would put one hermit in your sump if you want to. I took mine out last week as I do not have an abundance of feather dusters in it. I suspect the hermit has eaten them all up. They are eating machines.

Also the shrimp can be kept on an airstone until you are ready to feed. What are you feeding anyway as most fish will leave them alone. The do live in our tanks just as long as other shrimp.

I went fishing last weekend at the south jetties, and I looked through some sargassum just for kicks. I found a couple of baby pipefish, some really interesting crabs , and a sargassum angler. That is one cool looking fish. I didn't have any way to keep anything alive, so I let them go.

I concur with Mark, my one Galveston hermit eventually at all my 300+ feather dusters in my refuge cheato :( :(

He was great about eating cyano and some kind of unwanted hair algae though. If you don't want feather dusters in your refuge, one of those guys will keep it very clean.

Those snails that come out of the water and are found in the marsh are periwinkle snails - they eat algae growing on the cord grass in the marshes (So they spend alot of time outside the water).

When we had our spring collecting trip there, we went to the base of the dike on the south side. There's a small beach there with a white pavillion. We just picked up stuff along the rocks and a couple of guys pulled a seine.

Pam and I went to the Texas City dike (where the spring collecting trip went) about two weeks ago...no pods but we saw some of the cutest little anglers, a couple of file fish....we went for pods though and were so disappointed...maybe too hot?

Oh no!!!!!

:-o I have three in my tank! But I have yet to see them above the sand bed.....in fact, the only time I see one is when they are against the glass about 1" below the DSB. Sometimes you can see a hump of sand moving along the bottom....kinda like a mole. I guess next time I see one I'll get 'em out......they do a good job of keeping the DSB churned up though :?

blue crab

hey I just put a blue crab in my tank. I only have damsels in it b/c my tank is still cycling and I wanted it to eat all the algae that is growing. Why are blue crabs so bad and should I take it out right now?

They are bad because they will eat just about anything in your tank, including your fish if they can catch them, and beneficial creatures in your sand bed, etc.

I personally wouldnt put it in my tank at all.
