go ahead and just cook that blue crab... will do nothing and will probably end up eating your damsel if you are not careful....

>>Do you recommend a certain type net? I am going down there this weekend for some ghost shrimp for my eel and Sargassom fish. If you have a link or a place to get one, let me know what kind and where.

A cast net works wonders. You can catch them by the handfuls in the marsh. You can pick up a cast net at wal-mart or academy. Learning to throw it is another thing altogether. ;-)

One of the green dip nets at Academy works better. The net is green with about a two foot wooden handle.

It also has a metal guard across the front of it to protect the net for when we collect peppermints along the rock groins.

I'm also working on making this thread an article. I'm about halfway done with redoing it all.

So is MARSH going to do a Texas City dike collection trip this year? I would like to get some more porcelains and pods.

Justin, What size boat do you have? Where do you launch out of?

Brian, That is what I am hoping to do again. Sherri did a great job on putting the crawfish boil together for the last two years and I am hoping to new BOD members can step up and do it also.

Is Galveston the best place to collect around here? We are not from the area & we want to go out collecting. Also, when is the best time of day/year to go?

Hi Mark,

Your collection of animals seems very interesting. I'm not familiar with Texas at all, but where is Galveston in relation to Houston. I'd love to go on a collecting trip with you when I travel to Houston in May. A few hobbyists in Halifax, Nova Scotia have cold water marine aquaria and also collect a lot of interesting creatures, albeit in cold water. If anyone else has collected local critters, are keeping them in their tank and is in Houston area I'd love to pass by and have a look when I visit the city.

Galveston is South of Houston. Maybe about 45 minutes away. Just contact me when you know what your schedule will be like.

Thanks for the invite Mark -- that's quite kind.

It looks like I'll be leaving May 19 (Fri) and returning on either the 26th or 27th. My wife is trying to convince me to stay another week so I could potentially be in Houston until June 2nd.

Mark, got another one for you. I collected this guy about 6 weeks ago. He just got out of QT. Tentatively identified as a smallmouth grunt.

Looks like Lagodon rhomboides, the southern pinfish. The smallmouth grunt has a more yellow tail and is usually found way offshore or around Port Isabel.

You're right!

I'm used to catching grunts offshore and inshore in Florida, so I didn't look very hard for an ID.

Here's a good reference..

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/species/pinfish/

Grows to 4.5", eats amphipods, worms, shrimp (I can confirm these last two- they chomped on small ghost shrimp and pods in QT.)

They have been eating prepared foods (squid, brine, mysis, formula one / two, etc.)

Not sure how reef-safe they are, but they appear to be safe with larger shrimp (even let the cleaner pick at them.)

They are reef safe in as much as they don't bother corals, clams, sponges and such. Every now and then they will bother a feather duster, and they will eat small shrimp or very small fish if hungry enough. Not an easy fish to ID unless you've ran into them before. Very hardy, a fast healer and disease resistant. When I lived in Massachusetts and New Hampshire these were called Carribbean Rainbow Bass and sold for between 20 and 40 depending on size. I have seen then eat both mantis shrimp and bristleworms.

Does anyone ever collect sand from Galveston? Just thinking of a cheaper way to stock my 100 gallon
