I know CBBSteve has used Galveston sand in his old tank. You might want to bake it to kill off any parasites, pathogens, etc. Apparently it isn't real great to look at though, just kind of grey and dull. It can be done though.

Anyone have any pictures of the Galveston Sand in their tank. Maybe I could use it for my refugium or would it be better to get the regular stuff? Thoughts on that?

There is nothing wrong with using Galveston sand as long as you take into account that it is a Silica sand, not Calcium Carbonate. It won't buffer the tank as well as a Calcium based sand, but a lot of people don't use sand at all and have no problems with pH and alk. The grain size is smaller, so it packs itself down more, which can be good or bad depending what you are going for. A smaller grain size means more of it will go into suspension in the water column. This can be a problem for magnetic impellers in pumps and powerheads, so try not to stir it up too much. Some seagrasses do better in silica sand and many digging inverts like it a lot better than coarser Calcium sand. It will provide a constant source of bio available Silica to the tank. This is great if you have sponges, but can be a problem since Silica is a limiting element in diatom growth, and too much Silica can help diatoms take over a tank in the early stages. As long as you supplement on a regular basis and keep the water quality stable, you should not have too many problems using Galveston sand. At least you can replace it if you don't like it and not worry about having wasted money since it was free.

I am in the process of editing and revising this so we can put it on our articles section. I am using a lot of Mark's info, but if there is something you would like to add, including picture, please email me what you want to contribute. kim.price@marshreef.com

Thanks!

did it!!!

We are from the Louisiana . We came here sun night to find out about catching peppermint shrimp. My husband and I decided to go spend the night there Monday. We stayed at a hotel along the sea wall. We went across the Ramada. There were two jetties one on one side of the resturant and one on the other. This was our first time. We went ate at the resturant and had a couple of drinks and around 10:30-11:00 we went. We caught around 24 and some HUGE hermit crabs! I know now that we should have brought some bait! But we caught and had fun-maybe it was the drinks lol
