I was reading a few threads on Reef2Reef a lot of new hobbyists for sure. Many of them asked if a nano was ok for beginners and why people tell them to go big as you can.
So just curious what everyone on here started out with?

I’ll share mine,
I started with a fluval evo 5 gallon. I got from fish gallery years ago. I got when I was 14. I remember reading a bunch of articles how to cycle, all about corals and fish. How to keep them. It was great later I sold the tank to my friend Garrett that got him in the hobby.

I started with a 29g that had a canister filter, power head and 2 bulb T8 fluorescent lighting. Of course this was back in the 80's.

I started in 1990 with a 90g with an under gravel filter and T8 lighting.

That's assuming we're just talking about our saltwater adventures. The real start of the whole fishkeeping thing was as a kid with a 1g goldfish bowl, and when I upgraded to a 2g, I thought that was pretty amazing.

I was taking the salty life. But if we r Gonna take it way back to even fish. I remember when I was 5 my dad got me a 29gal African cichlid tank. It was awesome there was 10 generations of fish before we sold the tank. Then started fish keeping again around 7th grade with a Betta in a 10gallon had that for a few years then on my 15th bday sophomore year I got my first saltwater water tank.

When I kept freshwater tanks The largest I ever went with was a 20G. Had it for years and when I converted to salt I kept the same tank, and realized I was going to want bigger right off so I upgraded to a 37 tall within a couple months. Kept that for about a year then built the 75 that I have now. From my experience, having a larger tank doesn't necessarily make it easier, just gives me more time to react to issues.

20g tank.

Bought someones setup in San Francisco (I lived south about an hour). I had not a clue how to do anything. I was experienced with Freshwater (up to 55g), but not saltwater. I was making saltwater in the bathtub. Didn't realize how temp affected salinity, etc. I have no idea how none of the fish died that very long night. Was a great tank though, and learned a ton about everything. Eventually even had a 150w metal halide over it for a RBTA.

20 gallon... then 55 gallon that I still have. Only now it is used to winter my gold fish pond fish in. I have had the same 125 for 22 years now... No scratches but the center brace snapped a few years ago and reinforced it cool eh.
