So have been thinking about stocking my 265g (84x24x30).

1st I'm an angelfish lover but those are mostly out of the picture if I want to have LPS.

So I'm thinking tangs, wrasses and other assorted fish.

I came up with this list of tangs but need to whittle it down...

Here is my list:
Zebrasoma
Yellow Tang
Purple Tang
Black Tang
Gem Tang
Desjardini Tang

Acanthurus
Powder Blue Tang
Achillies Tang
Clown Tang

Paracanthurus
Blue Hippo Tang aka Dory

Ctenochaetus
White Tail Bristle Tooth Tang

Probably WAAAAY to many even at 3" or so a piece. What do you think?

Which ones would you choose or not, and why? Feel free to mention others.

Tang police need not comment lol

I tend to be very conservative when it comes to fish stocking, so I won't comment on putting that many tangs in one tank.

I don't have any personal experience, but from what I've heard the purple tang tends to be the most aggressive of the Zebrasomas.

I highly recommend the white tail bristle tooth - they look good and are an amazing part of the clean-up crew.

One in the Acanthurus genus I've always wanted is the lavender tang. They have a nice one at Fish Gallery The Woodlands, but it is in the fish-not-for-sale coral tank.

And of course, who doesn't like Dory and Bubbles (yellow tang)?

Zebrasomas
Of the Zebrasoma, I have a yellow and a gem. I like the yellow because it provides a lot of flashy yellow that is not provided with corals. My gem is a beautiful fish but was more of an impulse buy. I had a purple with my yellow with no problems until I added the gem (I know...not supposed to mix zebrasomas, but my tank IS 400g so I was hopeful). Turns out the purple started beating up on the gem so he had to go. Now have a yellow and gem together successfully. For me, sailfins get too big and blacks just blend it too much. In the beginning, I had 5 yellows together and that was pretty. Once they got bigger, they started to pick on one another so had to whittle it down to 1.

Acanthurus
I have both an Achilles and Powder Blue. I really like the Achilles because he is very very active. I had the Achilles for several years before adding the Powder Blue. Again, another big no no. I figured 400g was plenty of room for both of them. Initially, the powder blue and achilles fought (I knew it was a crap shoot). I would have taken the powder blue back out if I could have caught him but there was no way. After a couple of months, things settled down and the achilles and powder blue get along fine. I'd say the yellow and the gem pick on him more than the Achilles.
One acanthurus I didn't see you mention is a fowleri. I have one and its the most peaceful and imo beautiful fish i have. It has a very unique personality and changes colors with his mood. Truly a fun fish to watch. Loves to blow bubbles on the surface.
Clowns I have heard can get mean so I've never had any interest in one.

Paracanthurus
Everybody must have one of these just because.

Ctenochaetus
I have a white bristle tooth tang and he is ok. Not much to look at and doesn't really stand out. If I had it to do over, I'd probably opt for a different tang, just because there are prettier ones out there.

I noticed you left Naso off of the list. I have a bonded pair and they are in my top favorites. My male will eat out of my hand and it has been fun watching him grow from just a few inches to 8-9" with streamers now. He and the female are always schooling together.

Wait Steve there are 1 genus of angel fish that are completely reef safe I have one!
Genicanthus angel fish In that genus are 100% reef safe. I have a female bellus angel, I’ve got a mixed reef with a clam and I’ve had meaty lps and has lps in the tank with it. There are a few other species but I personally like the bellus and the Watanabei Angelfish.

As far as tangs, my favorites are yt, Atlantic blue tang, Lieutenant tang ( saw these while in Hawaii and omg I wanted to take them home With me! ) and cus it’s a big tank a beautiful male blonde naso with streamers starting to develop!

I have a yellow, tomini and Kole Tang. Of the the tree the Kole is my absolute favorite. Beautiful fish with an active and great personality, absolute beast at keeping the tank free of nuisance algae and not a hint of aggression, territorial tenancies, or interest in nipping at my corals. The Yellow is very territorial and moderately aggressive to the point where I almost want to pull him out, and the tomini is just too shy.

My fowleri is changing colors. Very nice addition but they get big.

Tomini isn’t much to look at but pecks around all day keeping things clean.

Surprised there hasn’t been mention of how and when you add surgeons to your tank. That, in and of itself, is also part of them getting along.

My plan was to add them in 2 groups. qt (copper/api general cure).

Probably after wrasses and a few other small fish.

Dont' add more than 3-5 tangs - they are nice but also don't forget they are poop machines versus wrasses and other smaller fish.

My sailfin is my favorite fish in my tank. I have a purple tang who is a d!@k but beautiful. I also have a blue hippo. They all get along well now, just was a rough start. I really want to add a kole to the gang but probably won't due to the purple tang not liking new comers. I also have a handful of chromis and a tusk that the tangs ignore. If I had to start over I would get an Achilles tang. Definitely a gorgeous fish.
