Sad to say it.. but I'm moving soon. Selling off basically everything other than some livestock that is going to be held for me.

At my new location I'm trying to figure out what I want to do...

Red Sea, Water Box, Planet, Custom

I think the MAX that my wife will even let me entertain is 86" - I'm thinking rimless or slightly recessed perimeter braced

Your wife is super nice. You had many large tanks in the past couple of decades.

I take it back. For the price of the biggest waterbox ($7500 with no availability yet) or Red Sea, id do a custom 84” x 36” x 26” low iron, external overflow with a t-slot alufabinc stand with acrylic 5’ sump.

I have to agree with my friend TX Punisher. Custom is the way to go - any tank builder.

Okay if you are paranoid like me about tanks leaking definitely scratch Red Sea - I sold my RS 750 XXL after a very short time and it was not cheap when I bought it new/installed professionally. The last thing you want to worry about is glass panel detaching for some reason. I could not deal with it mentally so got rid of the tank. Otherwise, amazing tank.

I have never owned a water box - seems high dollars. For that much money I would get the Elos 200 XL (that's the one I had - definitely DREAM TANK) without the stand. Many people don't know Elos build the bottom panel in 3 layers of glass/silicone. Super flexible special silicon made by Elos so even if your stand is not perfectly level there is a very slim chance of tank leaking.

I think custom is the way to go - if cost is not an issue - definitely Elos tank only (only $7,800 )

i had a smaller elos once upon a time ago. It was nice for what it was. but i wonder how good support will be if things go south.

didn't elos america close a few years back? did someone else take over?

Nah I never regret spending money on reef…probably way over $75k

BUT when the wife says to me I never ask you how much you spend on your fish tanks that will slow you down.

Guys, want to know y’all’s thoughts.
I am moving to a new house in a month and am considering setting up a big tank.
The room is 12’x12’. Big entry ways leading to this room, so I can fit a big tank in there..

I have a Red Sea 120 4x2x2, it is dry and cleaned out (broke it down as I thought I was moving away and was going to have to leave the hobby). I know I’ll be in my new home for a good 5 years though if life continues per usual and will be able to continue the hobby!

SO… this thread has lead me to Planet Aquariums.
Considering a 96”x24”x20” rimless for amazing tangs/other beautiful fish, and really nice BTAs. (possibly 84”)
Not sure if I’d want to plunge back into SPS, I really like SPS but it requires much more attention than Fish/nem tank. But it is a possiblity.

Was considering getting the upgraded glass all the way around, having it clear on all sides of the tank, and sticking the tank several feet off the wall so I’d be able to enjoy all sides of it. (I’ve always wanted a peninsula). It would be with their 4 foot sump/fuge.
Not sure if I want an internal or external overflow considering the fact that I’m looking to put it off the wall and be able to enjoy it from all angles. Need opinions on overflow, I’m assuming their external is still the way to go.

Thoughts and considerations?

New house currently being renovated. I’d keep the blinds mostly closed on that window to prevent algae issues.

I personally love 20” tall tank’s. Although you loose a little vertical visual appeal (to me it’s the same) you gain much easier access to inside the tank and your armpits will love you. 24” will allow you to deliver the flow better, but that is my personal rule! Never go over 24” tall. Rimless all the way!

Ease of access and less water volume to manage was my thinking, prefer wider to taller!

Wider is always nice! Just remember if you go two wide it’s double the lights.

Pretty sure glass cages is under new ownership. I agree OLD glass cages quality was hit or miss. I have no idea on the product quality with the new owners.

^ It seems like the old glass cages were a no-go.
This guy Joe at glass cages seems to have really taken the company in a positive direction in the last couple years. Gonna call him today and see what he has to say.
Seems like their product and quality control are on par with others in 2021
I believe companies can turn around, like anyone hesitant to buy a Red Sea over their leaks on their longer models a few years back I would just have to disagree with

Yeah new ownership as of Oct. 2019. Joe and his business partner have really cleaned up their QC amongst other issues

They have plenty of starfire glass whereas Planet was complaining about their supply

I also like that it’s not through a wholesaler, but is direct to consumer. Top level customer service seems to be their aim as well

new, just came out. dunno the diff between this and the reef lx

looks like the reef lx is a 80/20 stand and the infinia is a welded aluminum tube stand. pretty expensive for the $$$

You are moving close to Dallas, seems like Planet is the easy answer...Texas based and you could go pick it up...
