The fish like to hang out underneath so we fished the patches. Not this time though. It was a little frustrating there were no fish. We were out for 3 days. It was probably still too cold but we did hook up to some tile fish and that is just about the sweetest, best tasting fish in the sea haha. They chill out at around 1200+ feet so you’re gonna want to bring an electric reel and a lot of string.

They hang around the platforms but will feed off of smaller critters of the sargasssum. I like ling and amberjack... electric reels?.. come on popeye a 1-2hr fight bringing them up is well worth it. Just strap in tight, pulling up a 70lb fish from that depth is like trying to reel in a car.

If you come to Austin, I will gift you a 5G bucket of assorted Bryozoan limestone that was an ancient
(50-100 million years) coral reef that is now present day Florida. In essence the reef in my tanks can be traced back 50 million years. When you get my age, those details matter. 🤗.

I live 5 minutes from the Salt Lick in Hays County.

PS: When I dismantled the big tank (12’ by 20’ at 4’ high) In the green house there was Texas holey rock next to diver collected live rock that was excavated from rock quarries inland and then railed to seaport, then 500,000 pounds was barged offshore and deposited by crane to flat bottom lease in 30’ of water due west of Tampa Bay.

Here and now are small piles of live rock that have been bleached 5 years in the sun.

On these 1.5 acres, there are two exposed Edwards Plateau limestone shelves which collided to make a wet weather stream and very visible are similar marine fossils. So, in fact, Texas holey rock is of marine orgine when Texas, Louisiana and Florida were shallow inland seas.
Much appreciated Sir. Not sure when I'll be that way but will let you know when I am

Seeing your pictures brought back high school memories. Our travel time to the rigs going out of Intracoastal City was less than 3 hours and we had many production platforms to choose from. On more than one occasion we brought scuba divers with us and they would bring up 500 lb fish.

All to often, I got seasick and I would transfer to rig and fish from the platform.

I have never seen one. Looking forward to this. Thank you.

How long have you been breeding them?
On and off for 10 yrs ... mainly just when I need them and I will end up with a bunch that will die in few days if no aiptaisa is present.

I considered posting this in Nutrient management thread but choose here for the jovial vibes,

Nutrient management comes in many flavors. Because I think in terms of the microbial loop, I see the results with diverse filter feeders in the systems, but seldom do I see the actual players in the microbial loop. Today, I got to see nutrient management with the “big boys”: Sally Light Crab and Bi-Color Angel. As I feed each of 5 tanks live mussels on half shell, I noticed that mussel & shell were no longer in place in 120G tank. As I peered into tank I saw a flash of movement between rock maze as Angel outflanked Sally Lightfoot and brought mussel back to the front of tank for everyone t:eek: eat.

Dwarf angels will destroy your micrafuana , your corals and clams. They're omnivores. Im still trying to see if its my P. Venustus nipping at my sps. He looks suspicious but haven't seen him do it yet. Just a gorgonian he's been nipping at though. ReefBuilders just put an article out today. Screenshot_20230330-095606_Chrome.jpg

The Hippo in my 75G twenty five year mature tank has become intolerant of other fish bullying new fish. I have had him for 10 years and suspect he needs a larger tank. The 120G already has a yellow and a blue tang. The easiest way to catch him is to drain water to 3’ in display then bag him. I already am planning his replacements and in fact have purchased a tiny hippo tank smaller than my thumbnail.

I have learned to take the good with the bad. Dwarf angels have a very nice selection of colors to choose from. With fast growing GSP and ornamental seaweeds, I don’t mind fish grazing naturally on fast growing softies & seaweed.

That's about the biggest I've seen them get. I have a few about that size. Seems they want a specific diet but you have most that covered. Probably lived its lifespan. I do have some living trochus snails that are about 4" across the base. Eating. Size.

Escargot! 🤭 🤗

I keep flame scallops for about 2 years before they fade out, while some clams live 100 years.

Gerald Hesslinger is founder & CEO of IndoPacific SeaFarms in 1995. He partnered with Walt Smith to teach island villagers in the IndoPacific to farm coral and clams and to adopt sustainable harvesting of the fisheries for food by developing an ornamental mariculture export economy with corals and clams.

Three enviromental stewards I am knowledgeable about are Richard at Tampa Bay Saltwater, Gerald at IndoPacific SeaFarms and Walt Smith
