I am setting up a DD 200 system and I have purchased the Zeovit system with a reactor, but now I am not sure I want to go that route. Are there any Zeovit users here, and if so, would you do it again if you were starting over?

I bought the Zeovit system with intentions of doing just that but would like some opinions from other users on their experiences with theirs.

Always felt the zeovit system was too hands on and costly for me so I never did it. I think you can get nice colors without going through all that... some may argue not as nice as with zeovit but honestly, if I'm adding 3 drops of this, 7 drops of that, and shaking my media every 2-3 days, I honestly don't think I'd have time to really enjoy my colors anyways.

I heard zeovit is going away from too stark of a nutrient deprived environment and changing their methodology to something that incorporates some nutrients back in the system but I haven't kept up.

I've been running ZEOvit for close to 4 years now. If I had to do it all over again I would go the ZEO route again. One thing to realize is that Korallen-Zucht makes a LOT of products with the ZEOvit name on them. They make some very good products and then they make some that aren't so good. Well, I shouldn't say they aren't good. I should say I didn't see any results in my tank when using them. Maybe someone does.

The most important thing to know is you do not need to purchase every blue container you see to run the ZEOmethod. Most people that visit a LFS that sells ZEOvit products sees the blue bottles and they stay away. They think since they do not run the ZEOvit method they cannot buy the products. That is false. Many reefers can buy some of the products and benefit from them. Even if they don't run the full system.

ZEOvit in short is a carbon dosing system. The basic setup consists of the following:

1. ZEOlite reactor
2. ZEOlite stones
3. ZEObak bacteria
4. ZEOstart3 carbon source

That is all you need to truly say you are running the ZEOvit "system". From there, all of the other products are a use on a "as needed" basis. Some of the products I would recommend using on a regular basis like the ZEOvit Amino Acids, ZEOzym, Coral Vitalizer and ZEOvit Coral Snow. Aside from those, all the other products are meant for a specific purpose. Want to tweak some colors? Look at their color enhancer products. Want to feed your corals more? Look at the coral nutrition products. Having some issues with your sand, water quality, algae? They have problem solving products as well.

While I still use a lot of their products I have been slowly changing some out also. I'm trying new things and tweaking my reef to see if other products give me even better results.

The question shouldn't be "Do I use ZEOvit or not". You should first ask yourself, do I want to carbon dose or not. Once you figure that out then you can decide if you want to use ZEOvit, Aquaforest, a homemade system of vodka, sugar, and your favorite bacteria or many other products on the market.

I started my saltwater sickness in 2004 and it's hard for me to change old habits. Starting a system with a few nasty shrimp in a pair of the wife's old panty hose was always my way but now I look at the Zeo system, I've already purchased, and changing my whole way of operating is daunting to me. I'm old and set in my ways. On the other hand I haven't done everything correctly with my way either.
I see great color and beautiful systems running Zeovit but others do the same without it. Think I will give it a shot. Change is good right?

zoebak - microorganism solution <-- pretty sure this is bacteria :)

biomate - "dilligent assistant for tanks with mulm" <-- is this bacteria? if not, does anyone know what the heck it is?

zeostart3 - "phosphate and nitrate reductor and starts the metabolism of the zeovit system", you said zeostart3 is a carbon source - does have acetic acid smell

zeofood7 - "multiplication of and the food for the dosed microorganisms", "food source for coral" -- also has an acetic acid smell

so whats the difference between zeostart3 and zeofood7?:confused:

One thing Korallen-Zucht is very good about it's NOT letting anyone know what is in the magic blue bottles.

You are correct. ZEObak is a bacteria
Biomate Not sure
ZEOstart3 is carbon source (food) for ZEObak bacteria
ZEOfood7 is an all around food source for tank organisms.

I agree start3 and food7 looks and smell the same. I never used the food7.
