Hey all,
I have a couple tank I'm looking to upgrade lights on, a 28g jbj and a 10g nano. I have different stock lights and pc fixtures for each wone but I'm looking into LEDs for obvious reasons. However I am still unsure as to how I should judge the capabilities/quality of an led fixture, which also means that I don't know enough to diy it or outline specs for someone else to build a custon fixture.
All I've really figured out (I think) is that 3w leds are better than 1w leds no matter quantity on a fixture, more narrow optics will reach deeper, and that its best to have a dimmer on the fixture so as not to run the leds at full power all the time. If someone were to point out to me some numbers and specs to look at, or suggest lights for either of my two tanks, that would be great. I don't want the heat and fans of a metal halide fixture again but I can do that if I can't figure out leds
So far I've been looking in the cheaper places as opposed to the mainstream brands, and I've found a couple things. The first is these par38 bulbs I've seen around, with one guy on craigslist with them here: PAR38 LED Aquarium Coral Reef Light 20k OR 14K FULL SPECTRUM BRAND NEW - $80 (Houston) How would those work? How many?
Another potential option I've found is this: LED Reef Bright Clamp On Quad Would that be okay on either tank? There is a video of it in action here: Page 1 of comments on Nano reef with LED lights - YouTube A comment down there sayd that the light is equivilant to 150w MH. true?
Anyhow Overall I just need any assessment of those two options or other cheaper options for led's (if they exist, lol), as well as some basic rules and specs to look at when assessing or buying led fixtures or designing one. Much thanks!!!
