Buying a complete lighting set w/ Hood is too darn expensive! Thinking 'bout building a hood (48") out of wood or something.... Anybody have any plans or know-how? For now, I'm looking to build a 4-VHO hood, but want to leave myself roof for MH's.

Moderators, please move this thread to the DIY forum.

And in response to the query, there are several people in MARSH who both have plans and actually build hoods/canopies for people. Look up TexasReefer for one. I know that there are several people who do really good carpentry work.

Just build it out of whatever wood you want and brace it at the seams. I did mine out of oak ply and braced it with 2x2s (really 1.5sx1.5s). Will have some pictures of it in a few days, but I am still in the process of staining it. Overall its pretty simple to build, the hardest part was cutting out the door.

Here's mine. I have stained it and instaled the lights, but need to take updated pictures.

I like that!!! The way it opens? Awesome! My problem is that I have a 72gal bowfront. Any suggestions?

The front bow you'd use the 1/4 " plywood. it should be flexable enough. you'll have to soak the molding to get it to bend that much. the top piece for the front can be a normal board. Just jigsaw one side to match the curve of the tank.
