I have an ORA yellow assessor and I love it. Not sure if the aussie's are different, and it's too late to look into it. However I will say that I would rather have a tank raised whenever possible. I'll also add that I got mine from Dennis at FJW and it's healthy and happy.

i also got one from dennis. It went mia. My 2nd one i got in a group buy from saltwaterfish.com

pretty cool little guy. Ora is a lot cheaper than getting a wild caught. I think wild run for about 100, ora is roughly 50 give or take.

Dang! That sucks. They are easily scared for sure. Be sure it isn't just hiding, because I can easily go a day or two without seeing mine.

False alarm. Mines popped back out after a full day going Mia.

2-10
My first assessor hid all the time. I would only see him out when no one was around. The moment he spots you he'd dash into the rockwork. Maybe he was sick that's why he was so timid.

10-10
My second assessor is a totally different story. Hes always out. Swims only on one side of the tank, but I see him over there swimming sideways and upside-down every now and then. He's not afraid when I approach the tank. He's not as yellow as the first one though. Very dark, hints of blue in his color.

So I guess it depends on the fish.

They are similar to a wrasse in swimming but a bit less active. Mine stays in the far right 30 gallons of my 90 at all times. It doesn't swim in open water much, mainly darting in and out of caves and tunnels.

I will say moderately active.

I rate mine an 8. This is based on the beautiful bright yellow color, and it's amazing swimming style. These fish swim vertical, horizontal, diagonal, upside down. It's really a fun fish to watch.

Captive bred is the only way to go if you have the option IMHO.

This fish should not let you down. Especially since your fish aren't very aggressive. Mine gets run off by the two tangs if he comes out too far.

Note: Tangs can be bullies!

Assessors live in aggregations so it's always best to purchase a shoal of at least 4-6. Their passive behaviors, as Llama indicated, will keep them around the rock structures where there are overhangs as they often hover upside down. If you have semi-aggressive fish in your system I doubt you will see much of the assessors unless you get a large shoal. If you have peaceful livestock such as gobies, fairy wrasses, firefish, etc. then a single or pair will suffice (I recommend a shoal).

You won't know until you try, but most likely it will keep the assessors at bay from its personal space and won't perpetually seek them out long-term. Tangs are known for their social structure within their own Family, but I've witnessed tangs ignore other tangs and viciously attack other fish types upon introduction for 2 weeks straight. As long as you add the tang last you should be ok.
