This info was so good (In My Opinion), I felt I had to share it here. This was PART of a post in the members only area. Just a brief sample of the good stuff going on behind the scenes here on MARSH.

Original Question:
I just purchased the total two part package from Bulk Reef Supply. My goal is to raise my levels.

I used the calculator on Bulk Reef Supply which was helpfull. Its pretty simple. I just plug in my current level and then plug in my desired levels and it calculates it for me. I took those numbers and divided them throughout a 7 day period

My question is: Will I be actually "raising" my levels or will they just be maintained were they are? I had gotten some advice on RC and someone told me that it will just be maintaining the levels that I had. The product seemed to have great reviews and was referred quite a bit by some fellow reefers. Does anybody have any suggestion or comments. I am new to this whole dosing thing. So a little advice would be greatly appreciated. I hope that I didn't waste my money buying this stuff only to figure out that I need another additive to do what i'm trying to do.

I also use my own RO/DI water and use regular sea salt mix from instant ocean.

Answer:
Absolutely great advice. Way to go Steve.

One thing you need to consider is your calcium and alk consumption rate. Remember, if you have corals or clams in your tank, then they will consume your ca and alk and you need to know how fast they do that before you can tell if you'll be maintaining or increasing your levels.

The simplest way to find the consumption rate for your tank is to measure the alk, wait a period of time - a day or a week or whatever without adding any 2 part, and measure it again. The difference between the 2 numbers divided by the number of days between measurements is the daily consumption rate. That's how much alk you'll need to add on a daily basis to maintain your level. If you want to increase your alk, you'll need to add more.

One other thing, it's my opinion that maintaining consistent alk numbers and keeping the ca and alk in balance are more important than the actual level. Looks like you've got a good target level, the important thing now is to get to that level of alk and keep it there and to balance the ca to the alk level.
