I've decided our quest for reefing has an underlying conspiracy to see how dedicated to the idea we are. It seems we take 1 step forward and 2 back.

The latest problem is that we completely resealed our new 135g except for the brace. Filled it up with water and it appeared we had success. Well, guess what? The brace popped off on one spot and it appears the tank is bowing on that side.

I'm assuming we can drain the tank (which we're doing right now) completely take off the brace and resilicone it and that should solve our problem? If anyone knows if there's a problem with my idea please let me know. Thanks!

You are just like me if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all. Sorry I can't help, but I hope you can solve all these problems and have a great reef tank.

Hang in there. We all have to deal with a lot of adversity to continue our habit - I mean hobby. :D

One thing I will say -I have no problem buying used equipment, but the one exception is tanks. I just don't trust used tanks - probably because I've had a NEW tank blow out a seal on me, so I'm even leary of new ones, let alone a used one. That's just my opinion.

If I were in your shoes, I would go to John at Global or one of our other sponsors and you can generally get some great prices on new tanks. Seriously - I've seen people on RC post about what they paid for their tanks, and we probably have some of the best prices in the country right here at our local LFS's. To save money, just buy the reef ready tank - skip the plumbing kit, glass tops, and cheesy light. Then DIY a stand and canopy - the only exception would be if you buy an Oceanic tank, you should probably buy their stand so you get the long warranty.

Get the tank new if you can for peace of mind, but everything else you need you should be able to find great deals on used stuff if you are just patient and watch the website.

I hear you and in hindsight I'd probably do things differently. At this point we have everthing pretty much to set up the tank other than making sure the tank is "sea worthy". We have completely taken off the brace and resealed it. We'll let that sit for a couple of days and then refill the tank. At that point we'll let that sit for a week or two to see how things go. If it doesn't work out I'm pretty sure I'm done at least for this year. A new tank won't be in the budget unfortunately.

Poor Karen!

It seems that every time I log on I hear something has gone wrong with your tank plans. :(

What did you do with the tank that you discovered was cracked on the bottom?

LOL, it's sitting on the edge of the driveway because I wasn't strong enough to take it all the way to the curb. I'm hoping the trash man will take it since they will take appliances. I suppose it would make a good reptile tank if you had the room. My son wanted to put his Russian tortoises in it, but there's no way it would fit in his room, lol.

If you're giving it away, would you give it to me? My son has a snake and would love a big tank like that. I can promise you future frags. :D

I'm not too far from Karen either. I could help out with loading it and you could pick up the blenny if you are on this side of town.

Karen,

What type of brace does your tank have? Is it center braced or Euro braced, around the top? If it is center braced, you should consider having the brace cut into pieces and reinstalling. There is nothing worse that those darned huge center braces. Or better yet run some Euro bracing. I wish I had thought of that while I was resealing my tank.

It's the big glass brace in the middle. Not sure what Euro bracing is. Do you have a link you could post so I could look at it?

Euro bracing looks just like a Acrylic tank. There is a glass lip that goes all the way around the top inside part of the tank.
