I have a diatom filter. Is pool grade diatomaceous earth usable in it, or should I use strictly food grade material?

seems to be the same. Most people I know don't run one on a saltwater tank though. I've only heard about people using it before taking pictures, or at a expo to help polish the water for display. Most people just run GAC on saltwater tanks to help polish the water.
I really wouldn't worry too much about running a diatom filter. I think the cons outweigh the pros for a saltwater tank.
