I can't find a definitive reference on feather duster life cycles. I noticed my feather duster doing the Mr. Fantastic and extending out of his tube like I've never seen. I thought he just really like tektite's red grape algae that he wasted to get closer. Well, he's completely out of his tube and on the opposite side of the tank.

Ideas?
* did it spawn and left the tube for the youngin'?
* is it growing and just needed to leave to formulate a new tube in a different location?
* is it dying?

Sometimes, when they're stressed, they can shed their crown and relocate. This may be due to something picking at it, or lack of food, etc... It's a toss up as to whether or not it'll make it. I've had one do it before and it began to re-grow its crown within a week or two.

I've read that as well, but my feather duster hasn't lost its crown. It just stretched out of its tube and floated away, crown and all. This morning it was a little shriveled up hiding under a rock. (Maybe the water was too cold.)

I'm trying to figure out how to post pics in these threads so bare with me.

I've heard of them abandoning their tube as well. Same suspected causes. It's possible that it'll start making a new tube. Also possible that it won't make it. These kind of things, you just have to wait and see.
Good luck.
