my friend is wanting to get a nano for her son. she is looking at the JBJ nano cube either the 12gal or the 24gal deluxe models. are these good or does anyone have any suggestions in a similar prices range. she is wanting LOW maintance- has experience bc. she was my tank sitter
She wont be wanting to mess with upgrades or any DIY.
I am assuming that if she got this set up it would be plug and play? does it come with the filter accesories (sponges, media etc.), bulbs?
any help would be appreciated
TIA

I have the 12G for my wife.... it is not low maintanece..... and i only have a FOWLR. if she is trying to create a mini-reef system it might be a lot more trouble. at least change a gallon a week. and top off about once every 3 days, well for mine it only has two pc lights so there isnt much, but there is a lot of salt creep and condensations so you have to wipe that out every night. well thats just my 2 cents. good luck.

I have the JBJ 12 g nano cube DX. It came with bio balls, filter sponges, (both of which I immediately took out and replaced with LR rubble) and 48w of pc lights. You can get it with either 6700K (I think that was the choice) lights or 10K lights. Of course I chose the 10K for a reef tank.

It is a plug and play tank. I love mine and have had no complaints. My one concern was the stand for the tank. It has a 15" square footprint, but is 3' tall. With it being that tall and "skinny" I was afraid it would not be stable, (I had visions of the tank toppling over and seahorses splashing across the living room carpet) so my hubby added a 24" square baseboard to it. That was easy enough to do and made the stand/tank set up much more stable.

Check out nanotank.com and nano-reef.com they have some threads on JBJ. JBJ cubes are know for cracking for no reason.

if she is willing to spend the money on a nano cube, this isn't much more, considering the increase in volume, and it comes with lighting, and skimmer, and it's acrylic so she doesn't have to worry about it cracking or her kid accidentally hitting it with something. downside, prone to scratching, you can buff the scratches out though. also with increased water volume maintenance is cut way back.
this is a good option i think.

and this is how one guy set his up.

thanks for your help guys. shw has decided on the 24gal JBJ. I think it will work for her for her son (he's only 6!) and we have talked at length about maintance etc. anyway... will be fun to watch them get addicted :)

I have also directed her to a number of sites including the nano-reef one.

apprecitate your input

Hey Kelsey, I believe Monica with OceanproAquatics will be taking orders on discounted nanocubes at the diy meeting. You should really bring your friend with you. Heck, maybe he'll even win the one in the raffle. ;)
