Does anyone know if ceramic tile can be painted and if so, what kind of paint to use? My bathroom floor tile is very worn and the grout and tile were never periodically resealed. The tile was white but without a good seal, it's more grey because dirt has gotten down into the little holes in the tiles. I've used various tile cleaning products as well as scrubbed with pure bleach but it's still not a bright, clean white. I would like to paint over both the tile and the grout in different colors. Can this be done and if so, what paint should I use? Remember, this is the main bathroom and gets lots of traffic and water on the floor.

Thanks,
Sherri

I painted my tile when I was living at the fraternity house 80yr old house and I don't think the bathroom had ever been cleaned. If you first use Kilz then a latex paint it will last.

Sherri, you could paint over the tiles with some oil based paint, but you'll face new problems with it as it will get wet and dirty fairly quickly.

Before you paint it, you should go to a true plumbing supply store (not Home Depot or Lowes) and ask them for an $9 bottle of stuff that is absolutely fantastic at restoring and simultaneously sealing grouted tile floors.

I can't remember the name of it, but it has letters and numbers in the name, like "R82LSO". If you will call me tonight at home, I can give you the exact name of it.

The stuff is amazing, and works far better than bleach.. it's acid based and really does the trick! Call me at 713-861-6629 after 6pm and I'll have the name for you.

I'd say I will just email you, but when I get home from work my brain turns off and I'll surely get to work tomorrow and will have forgotten!
