hey guys i have been on the forum for a while, and have only lived in houston for a little over a year, but i just got accepted to UH main campus and am wondering if you have any ideas for housing in that part of town.

Like i said i am pretty new to houston so i dont know what is good and what is bad, i just know alot over there is debateable, and since i live all the way in Katy its kind of hard for me to run over there and look at neighborhoods...

My dad is big into home improvement and all that stuff, so the house doesnt really matter much, we are looking for a neighborhood that is decent and as close to the campus as possible, we are looking to purchase a house...

if you guys have any insight into where i can look that would be awsome

Thanks,
Kyle

It's probably changed alot since I was there, but I'd agree that you're probably going to want to stay away from the houses/apartments close to campus.
We rented a condo in what's now the midtown area.
I knew plenty that lived in the dorms.
I lived in a fraternity house for about a year. Not great for the grades...but a "character builder." :D

I think if you want a house you should probably start fanning out past beltway 8 on the South and North sides of town, but of course I am more partial to the south.

Hello,

There is a popular place between memorial dr, and washington
a lot of remodeling and tearing down and rebuilding in that area. If
you where coming from down town on memorial, take a right on
wescott. and most of the area is on your right and left sides. Then hit washington and come back east towards town. the heights is
pretty nice too. Old housing being remodeled

Most of the places closer to the downtown area like the Heights are going to carry a pretty hefty pricetag.
My advice would be to look around and find an apartment/townhouse in the beltway and 59 or I-10 area.
That being said, if you're set on buying somewhere close and money isn't really an issue...I'd look in the Heights, Midtown, Bellaire, or West University. They all have plenty of fix-er-uppers.
I'll also re-state the statement/warning "don't go to close to campus."
Not sure if they're still there, but there used to be some houses that ran along the edge next to the Towers. I recall staying at a certain sorority house over there. 8) You might check into some of those. They're so close, it's like living on campus.

I love my school...huge supporter, especially during football season...but I wouldn't want to be caught after sundown close to campus without an armed escort.
