From all I have read and been told they stand up fairly well to long term use. If not I think ice cap can refurbish them for little to nothing and have it good as new.

Why buy it used for that price. Just check with John at global last time I was in he told me $150.00 plust tax on a brand new one that is cheaper than on line once you include shipping.
Me personally I am just leary of buying used lighting ballast, unless I personally know the person. just my 2 cents.

Why buy Icecap at all? You can buy Workhorse ballasts at a fraction of the price. Even if you have to buy several of them, it's still cheaper than 1 IceCap. And, since they are separate ballasts, you get separate control for dawn/dusk effect.

Yeah, can someone post all the specifics for how to do VHO with the Workhorse ballasts? It's time for me to ditch the pc's on my softie tank and do all VHO.

I need to know what all to buy and where to buy it.

Thanks,
Sherri

If you try to use the WH7 ballast with 6 ft bulbs I think you will only be able to use one bulb per ballast. The WH7 is only capable of a 220 watt load so anything more will just be underfired. I use the WH7 to fire 24" bulbs on my 37 gallon and 48" bulbs on my 75 gallon. I haven't had a problem with them yet. You can get the WH7's from World Lighting here in Houston. Talk to Angel. I think she is the owner's wife.

So, a Workhorse 7 will fire two 110's? If so, you could drive the same amount of light with 2 WH7's vs. an IceCap 660. Hmmm.

So how much are they, and what additional stuff do you need? Are VHO endcaps sold only by aquarium-related places or are they also sold at World Lighting?

I bought mine for about $40.00. I have great success firing 2 48" URI vho daylights.

The workhorse7 is about $40 from World lighting. You can buy the end caps from any of the LFS. I haven't used them myself but I installed them on Kim's tank and they have been running for over a year w/ no problems w/ 2 110W URI vho's. World lighting is right around the corner from my house and I can tell you they are really great to work w/. I've went there before to buy a MH socket and they didn't have a new one in stock so he cut one off a old light and gave it to me free. When I switch my 55 from PC's to VHO's I'll use the Workhorse7 on mine.

I am using 2 wh7's on my 37 firing 2 24" bulbs each. I think I am going to move the 37 into a 58 gallon I have so I will then use them to fire 2 36" bulbs each. The 75 gallon is using 2 wh7s to fire 2 48" bulbs each no problem. Talk to Angel and tell her you need some wh7's I have ordered a few times so I usually get them for about 34 bucks each. They even delivered them to my house (an hour from houston) for free once because they were somewhat in the area. Endcaps are usually around 9.99 a pair at the lfs and you can get solid core copper wire from lowes for 9 cents or so a foot. You also have to get a power cord which can be picked up at lowes for around 4 bucks. After you get the ballast, endcaps, and necessary wires you will be looking at around 60 bucks for a dual 48" vho setup. Not too bad in my opinion.

boudster,

texasreefer and Aggiebrandon summed it up, I follwed the reccomendations from Angel and a few over at reefcentral. Like they say Angel is great to work with, and they delivered to my house also. They happenned to be doing a job down the street, so they just dropped it off. Now thats customer service.
