Generally speaking they're not but mostly that is because of how big they get, the fact that they eat your clean-up crew, and they are very messy; very large volume of waste to deal with.
Having learned a lot from Leonard who passed away this year I would not do it again with out a MUCH larger system. That said they are one of the most pet like fish you can every have the pleasure to be responsible for.
