I have mine set up on reef crest (purple color) for the nice wave action. I have one on each side of the tank and they are not sync together. I need to set up the night mode; I'm sure the corals will enjoy a more calmer night.

What's your favorite mode?

From what I've read there is no calm period at night on the reef. I wouldn't really slow things down at night. There is growth activity all the time and SPS need good "ventilation".

As for mine, I run it constant speed. Any of the modes spend too much time at lower speeds and I don't like the pulse modes. Personally, I think the MP40 is a ripoff. You would think a $400 powerhead would be enough alone for a 90g. I do love the way it mounts though. Would be nice if they offered a constant speed only model for $200 without the wave controller.

So I guess no need to set the night mode.

You were better off buying tunzes for constant speed for half the price. I have 2- 6085 tunzes running constantly towards the back of the tank and those pumps produces tons of flow.

I read good things about the reef crest/lagoon mode (yellow); I will give it a shot.

I use the Night Mode on all my Vortech pumps. True, the ocean does not slow down at night, but in the ocean fish have the opportunity to swim great distances to find somewhere nice and quiet to sleep. That's not always possible in a fish tank. Night mode doesn't seem to affect my corals, so I don't see any reason to not use it. I know the fish sleep easier. I spy on them with my red LED light and they do seem to be in a deeper sleep (if you can call it that) when the pumps are in night mode.

With that said, my pumps otherwise stay in Reef Crest mode.

Another thing to keep in mind is that your O2 levels actually drop at night. Slowing the flow down may actually exacerbate the occurrence of low oxygen areas.

I use reef crest (yellow), FWIW. I like the way it ramps up and down. I tried pulse mode but the wife found the noise too distracting.

I've only one so no sych here.

I use the blue pulse mode (10 out of 12 dots) during the day and reef crest at half power during the night. Seems to work out ok. I still get some flow yet it's not as "brisk" as the pulse mode.
