I am not the reef person in my house (my husband is the hobbist) but I do like to watch the aquarium and learn about it. We have had our anenome a little over two months now. This morning I noticed that its mouth was open and it was all shrunked up (apologize for horrible lack of term) which obviously means it has taken a turn for the worse. There was no cotton mouth or anything. He turned the rock it was attached to upside down to cool it off because the tank was at ~80 degrees. I checked on it again when I got home this afternoon and its mouth has closed up, still not cotton mouth. It seems to be pulling its outter edges in towards its mouth and then letting them go like it is trying to move or something? Could some more advanced reefers please help me.

Well normally a closed mouth on an anemone is a GOOD thing. I would only be worried if the mouth is droopy or open. A small, tight, closed mouth is signs of a healthy anemone. Do you ever feed it anything?

Well if the mouth is fine now and you feed it regularly I would say its nothing to worry about. Anemones can be finicky sometimes and it may of just been in a bad mood temporarily :)

Also what do you mean when you say Cotton Mouth in regards to the anemones mouth? I've never heard of this.

I have been researching everything and many of the things i have read say that if the mouth is gaping and there is a white cottony substance coming out then they most likely wont make it.

If that thanks was toward me, and whether or not you love "this" site, or Karen's site... you are very welcome, and I love Karen's site, as well. This site is "ah-ight" too. ;)

Good luck with the 'nem!

the anemone was probably "pooping".

on all anemones, there's only one in/out point for food. anemones eat and poop from the same opening. and when they are pooping, the anemone looks bad. it will shrivel up, open its mouth, and then go back to normal.

i would still keep an eye on it though.
